CTF Mini-Challenge #7: -- JOY -- official start

I tend to agree with bauerman - "joy" is not found in landscapes, etc, which I tend to shoot a lot. I also have a few pictures of happy adults - but I don't want to confuse "happiness" with "joy", as they are not the same thing. The photos I took that truly depict joy are limited to youngsters, as I submitted.

Jim
Dear all,

to motivate those of us who like to take pictures of babies and
children, and also those of us who think that photography is more
than babies and children, I just decided to have two groups
of winners, you might say two mini-challenges at the same time.

Group ONE: "Joy" depicted with the help of those gorgeous babies'
and children's photos that we have already seen so far.

Group: TWO: All other entries.

So we will see two winners, two runner-ups and two "third place"s.
I will declare one of the winners the host of mini-challenge #8. -
The original rule "one photograph per participant" still applies,
so don't submit two photos now.

Best regards
Frank
I can understand why you are doing that - but it is a product of
the topic chosen - not the fact that we are all "kid crazy". It's
tough to depict "Joy" in a landscape or in a flower - if you know
what I mean. I have TONS of other photos to choose from - but Joy
sends me to something that depicts it. My opinion. I completely
realize that photogrgpahy is more than "babies and children"........

I think this is an interesting discussion, and I sure hope that this does not keep anybody from posting his or her interpretation of "Joy" here. For me, Joy means truely enjoying yourself, and it would be very sad if this is restricted to children. Imagine a really nice party, everybody chatting and dancing and eating and drinking and just having a good time. Could that be "Joy"?

Just my 2 cents,
Frank

One of the first pictures I took with my new A70 a couple days ago.

Is it "legal" to enter this in both the CTF Challenge #40 and here? I don't really care, I just love the picture anyways!

Dear all,

first of all a big Thank You to all participants. We have some last minute entries which is great.

I decided to abandon my initial idea of a separate judging on "non-baby non-children" pictures depicting joy, since there are only very few falling into that category. Those three that I can still access right now are so very different from each other that I could not put them in any order, and - in my personal opinion, and that is what mini-challenge is about - they all stand somewhat behind the pictures that I mention below.

So, here we go. Sorry for those excellent shots that aren't mentioned here, but I had to take some decision ....

First place and overall winner to Ray Soemarsono for his untitled b/w photograph depicting a very happy boy splashing water onto his face. Great shot, perfectly captured! Congratulations!

2nd place (very close actually) to the almost-too-late entry of jhect (Jason ...) "Pure Joy". Here, apart from being a perfect snapshot, I like the holding hands on the picture, which implies not only a joyful child, but also a joyful adult - probably the father! And the expression of the child's face is unbeatable ...

3rd place to dbevis (Don ...) for his photograph "His first race car or his future one?" - proud and joy are often very close, not only in children.

Again, congratulations to all winners, and thanks again to all participants.

Ray, it's now up to you - I'm looking forward to mini-challenge #8.

I have enJOYed this! Best regards,
Frank

Dear all,

I have the honor to host the 7th Canon Talk Forum (CTF)
mini-challenge, and I chose the topic:

-- JOY --

[Pictures of people with the first name "Joy" are not eligible,
unless they depict JOY ;-) ]. EnJOY yourself by participating in
this little contest. Again, the challenge willl run for 7 days -
ending Friday 3-Oct 23:00 CEST (Germany) which should be something
like Friday 22:00h UK and Friday 17:00 Eastern Daylight Savings
Time.

I am looking forward to your pictures! Post them by replying to
this kick-off posting.

Best regards,
Frank

p.s. if I am breaking any rules or customs please let me know - I
am not so familiar with this, but it does not look too complicated.

Here are the rules...

The host gives you a topic and an image to get you going. You post
an image. The host chooses the winner. The decision of the judge
(the Host!) is final. The judge is not eligible. The winner then
chooses the next topic, judges the winner and passes on the baton
to that person.

It's not so much about going out and taking a photo with the
subject in mind (though by all means, do that if you want), it's
more about looking through your pics that are already at Pbase,
say, and posting one here that fits the topic. Any picture you've
taken is eligibe regardless of time taken and camera. You can do
all the post processing you want.

Here are some guideline:

When posting your picture change the subject to your picture title.

Either embed your image in the thread or supply a link to it. And
how do you embed a picture? I'm glad you asked: while your photo on
pbase (or any other web site) is open, copy the URL address from
the address box on your tool bar, then paste it into your reply
thread. Add a .jpg extension to get the photo to show up. Click on
preview to make sure it's what you want.

Provide any additional information you want.

Only one picture per person!

Please limit the size of your entries to conserve bandwidth.

As a show of courtesy, and to save bandwidth, please remove the
original post when replying, so you don't bring back any previous
photos.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joy has been completed for a number of days. Let's get the new one going......
