rod,

At least I did'nt post my HDR pic of Lonnit in my post above,

Lonnit,

Just beautiful, should give the boys some stiff competition to beat!

Just one thing Lonnit, don't you feel that entring 3 pics or variations on the same subject will lessen your chances of winning?

I would pick one (I like the B&W the best) and replace the others with other pics giving you a better chance of 1st, 2nd and 3place :-)

I'm still thinking what to enter for this challenge, as I bombed out badly in the last one with my electric fence entry.

Thanks, but I think the proper phrasing on that is that I just made the competition stiff! LOL!

Sometimes I put up 3 similars (or just 3 of anything that fits the theme) to see what response they get and then replace the less popular ones as or if I have the oppptunity to shoot more for the challenge.

LOL! I've been doing some more experimental stuff for me lately, which seems to be going over like a lead balloon. I usually have at least one in top ten, and it's not rare for me to have 2. Since I've been playing around my status has been dropping. I dont' even know what to do with that information! LOL! I mean, I can shoot straight and unaffected and get the popular vote and enjoy the wonderful compliments, or I can experiment and I enjoy that, but there go the points. If it were all for fun it wouldn't matter and I could do what I want. But, I'm trying to get into stock and so I do have to care waht buyers would want, so other people's opinions are important. So, I guess I shoot for me for fun and for others for "work". Perhaps continued experimenting will lead me to something that has style and popularity. :)

Hello everyone!
The new challenge is...

Body language -

As always, I am a firm believer in not restricting creativty so
your interpretations can be as open as possible. However the three
collective things that I would like this challenge to focus on are
people, non verbal emotions, and conveying mood through the medium
of digital photography. Good luck everyone!
My dictionary defines body language as: changes in your body position and movements that show what you are thinking or feeling. In other words, body language is, well.... a language and is supposedly used to convey some kind of message or at least an attitude. However, so far many image titles don't show much of this 'message' thing. To me, no matter how good an image may be photographically, if there is no message or emotion expressed, it's not body languge. To all who have entered images in this challenge, I would like to ask to take a second look at your titles and let them express what the message, emotion or attitude is you are trying to convey.
Are there others who have been wondering about this?

Cheers,

Julian

Yeah, me. I was thinking body language as being exactly what you've described......captured by a facial expression along with an hand gesture; a stance; a particular stride or hip movement etc. Or a pictorial dialogue between two or more people. And it should be obvious in the photo.

Thanks for the comments on this one. Rod - I had a go at a B&W conversion and put that in as well. Thanks for the idea and I'd appreciate any comments on how to improve the conversion as I simply used a PSE greyscale and then adjusted levels.

Thanks
I too was enticed to post an image for the first time. It's not a
current shot so is in the Exhibition, and while not technically
excellent, I'd appreciate any comments.
I had the option to include the rest of the kitchen but felt it was
rather distracting, so instead cropped tight. I'd particulary like
to know if you think this works or would be better 'in context'.

Thanks

Gayle and Julian,

I agree with both of you. Most of the pictures submitted so far are IMHO just off target. They're close but just not there. There are a few that are dead on topic. Mind you, some of these off target pictures are beautiful shots that I'd be proud to call my own.

When all is said and done it's the vote that will, as it has in the past, show what photo's are best and on topic.

I've seen a couple of your entries here where you used flash on some street photos at night. I find the effect very nice. Could you please give us some pointers as how you achieved that effect.

Thanks

Yes, I have been feeling the same way after viewing the current entries in both galleries. I hope this doesn't come across as rude, but sometimes I think people are too literal when submitting pictures in these challenges.

I agree with Julian,

but blade, sometimes it's hard to express a topic in a photo. This is my hardest challenge of all.

Hope I can make something work, so far my shots for this topic suck and thats why nothing uploaded as of yet. But I will not upload until I feel I am on topic and the photo is creative and worthy of an upload.

I agree PhotoNUT; and sometimes for challenges I have not entered, simply because I haven't taken anything worthy. I hope I didn't come across as sounding harsh. I really enjoy everyones contributions.

I'm glad you like the effect. It hasn't been all that well received here. There's really not much to it at all. I shoot in AV mode with flash. Perhaps the secret is shooting from the car. The shot is rushed so there's probably a bit of camera movement in it even if the car happens to stop for a moment. The subject's motion is frozen at the moment of the flash, but then ghosts for the rest of the exposure.

Have fun!

Relying on the voter’s expertise for the cream to rise to the top is a forlorn hope. Quite often the top ten is weighted towards pretty pictures, not powerful photographs that are on topic. I have no problem with this as this is the way these challenges are structured & we have lots of fun. To get the cream to the top we would have to get a group of experts judging the results, not without controversy of course. I've often thought when seeing a very good shot with positive comments under the photo not getting many votes that we should have a posters award for best shot. (I’m assuming that posters may know more about photography than non posters) as a lot of people that don't submit shots are regular voters. I haven't suggested this as it would take some of the glory from the popular vote winners. I bet if someone posted a nice sunset or close up flower shot in every challenge it would get lots more votes regardless of the topic

Looks like we will have to reshoot:-)

Naw, mine has attitude! M saved your butt in your shot b/c she is overflowing with body language there! It was mostly her image that sent me over the top laughing. She obviously had a very good time with the shot and was quite a sport about it! How much convincing did it take?
