****CTF Challenge 171- Minimal Color****

I thought I had a handle on the topic - I thought instead of having a fairly desaturated looking picy the topic was about having a point of color and that the background didn't have to be black or white. My maple seed picy has a green background and Tommy thinks it's too "pervasive" but my daffodil picy, which has a black background, doesn't have enough color and looks too "contrasty" for the challenge. So what's a girl to do? I see a fair number of images in the galleries which have almost NO color at all and others which have a splash of very bold color. Are all of these interpretations on-topic? HELP!

Thanks for the heads up. Corrected the title. One question remains, the image that originally placed 9th is now gone.

It was linked to this link (posted below but don't click it yet). I have already clicked the link and thus lost the original cache for that page. Does someone remember who that image belonged to? or can turn on the "work offline" option of their browser and please check this link for me http://www.pbase.com/ctfchallenge/image/104546736 . I reckon the photog might have deleted his/her own pic, which is allowed if they feel so strongly about it(there are valid reasons) but if it was deleted by accident I would like to post it back up.

I'm really liking this topic for that very reason Carol. There are going to be so many takes on the subject and so many ways to push the envelope. It seems to me that as long as there aren't several different colors in play or at full whang it should fit the bill.

You're clever enough that no matter what you post will be fine.

One colour in a picy is minimal colour I think, I don't think Penny is saying the dominant colour has to have minimal saturation. White or black backgrounds sort of look colourless but say a red flower against a blurred green background somehow doesn't look to be minimal colour. So one dominant colour against a benign background or surroundings should work OK.........sort of I think:-)

There is a story in Buddhism of a man shot by a poisoned arrow. As he lay there dying he refused to have the arrow removed until he was told the name of the man who shot the arrow.

We are in danger of emulating him with the discussion on the meaning of the Challenge - the sun is shinning (or not) go out with your camera, take plenty of pics, and if you think they meet the Challenges criteria post them. Others will comment on them - but that wil only be their opinions.

Go out have fun, the news is depressing enough without having to worry about what is "Minimal color".

Buddy can you spare a dime? :)

My original idea was simply this, to have a small amount of color in a photo.

But I didn't post a good example in my header because the wall casts a blue hue and there is more color than I intended in the picy.

Then Konstantin posted his red chairs and the yellow lady.

My explanation to him was that color should occupy a small amount of space in the photo but the color should be important to the photo as a whole by creating a visual tension between it and the background space. The color can pop out if you like. So glossy color is fine, so long as there isn't so much of it that it becomes more vivid than minimal.

Anyway, now there's another dilemma because other picys (Rod's green plants, for example) have a lot of color.

Rod says it's one dominant color against a benign background. That's the way I saw it. I guess Konstantin did too (put back the red chairs please)

And then there's hue. I guess a picy could have minimal color by not having much saturated color.

So - have fun - intrepret the topic in ways that suit you and post lots pictures and we can keep discussing why they are minimal color.

We can post picys without fear for this challenge but discussing wot the topic is is half the fun a. We don't want to live a boring life like the Buddhists:-)

This is a great topic, I can see me shooting heaps of picys for this one & who knows I might snag a couple of gooduns a:-)

My feelings exactly. Like in: Who doesn't want comments? What's the point of posting if not to hear what others think of the shot?

Rod doesn't seem to be aware that some folks have more to do with their spare time than just taking, PPing, and posting shots to these galleries. Me thinks some folks are just plain busier than you, Rod.

The time seems right to just keep things loose and easy this challenge. I think it is good to do that once in a while. I just wouldn't want it to lead to all challenges being less structured or adherent to the topic in the future. I think it does few people good when most are working hard to meet the challenge of sticking to a topic and someone then posts a marginally topical image that just looks pretty and gets so much glory because of it.

You know it is funny with me, I sometimes find more material with the very specific topics- maybe they force me to concentrate and focus better?

I couldn't' find the lens cap when going to work last night, so I grabbed a CP filter for protection. During an idle moment I pointed the camera at some LCD monitors, turned the wheel on the filter.. and all went dark.

I knew of this in theory, I just didn't realize it could be used for much:
1: Double polarizing filters can, at certain angles, block out all light.
2: LCD monitors have a polarizing filter.

Now, the funny part came when I placed an empty bottle in front of the monitor. The bottle has no filter. So the camera saw its surfaces as nicely back-lit by what was on the monitor. Outside the bottle, the nice black "backdrop" still appeared, as far as the camera & CP filter was concerned.

I'm bound to have re-invented the wheel here, but just imagine what you can make of glass and water with that kind of lamps.. LOTS of fun :)

I know people get busy & the hobby or posting here takes a back seat but I just keep stirring the pot mainly for the few non busy ones. If I acknowledged the busy ones the few lazy buggers would just say they're busy:-)

It's no big deal really but I think if a busy person posts some picys in the challenge & keeps responding to the posts under their picys then it would only take an extra minute to post one comment under a picy that grabbed their eye each time they logged on.

It just makes for a more interesting challenge, like seeing YB posting comments now which has spiced things up nicely.

I'm fully aware that we all live our lives to how we think fit but you know me I can't resist.

Your demo is a great find & should produce a few good picys. Well done, I think you're very brainy:-)
