Cropping prblem with PS CS .....please help

Well, I may be wrong and probably too wrong to understand the
problem others have. But to my understanding thing works like this
(at my end at least).

1. CROPPING has nothing to do with the DPI, PPI, or LPI but finding
the good part of the original photo to Crop It.

2. Now, after you have the good part CROPPED, then you can change
the DPI, PPI, LPI to whatever #'s you want, as it has nothing to do
with the main cropping.

3. Now, if you don't mind the RATIO then you have the choice to set
to whatever size you wish, and tell Photoshop to change to whatever
  1. 's you enter. Or Photoshop will either stretch or squeeze the
photo to match the #'s you enter.

IOW, there is no way to turn a SQUARE into TRIANGLE without
destroying something. And if it's already square and you want to
change to a BIGGER SQUARE then just give it a larger value (just
make sure all sizes have the exact same value)
Yes agree with all that, but cannot do it anymore!

Ummm, Phil, you are using the Crop tool on the "Free Transform"
setting aren't you?

If not, click the downward triangle next to the Crop icon in the
top options bar. Scroll down and select free transform.

That help? If the crop tool is misbehaving while on free transform,
then I'd suggest deleting your Photoshop preferences file. When you
restart PS it will create a new one and you'll need to set your
preferences again.
Blue.

This sounds like it could be the reason, but I do not have a traingle next to the crop tool? My options bar is at the side and cannot find one on there?
Thanks for help.
Phil

Phil, not sure if this is the default behavior or not but right now, this is what happens with my crop tool:

I enter 5 and 5 for width and height (px gets entered automatically), resolution is empty. It crops to 5 by 5 pixels, dpi stays as it is.

I enter 5 px and 5 px (just to make sure it's the same) for width and height, resolution is empty. It crops to 5 by 5 pixels, dpi stays as it is.

I enter 5 cm and 5 cm for width and height, resolution is empty. It crops using the aspect ratio and changes the dpi accordingly.

I enter any other unit except pixels and it uses the aspect ratio but for pixels, it uses the actual document size and doesn't change the dpi. Resolution is always empty.

I could swear I had the aspect ratio for pixels as well before but today it doesn't seem to be the case, or I was dreaming before LOL.

Stefan,
Yes I used to use yoyr first one...

I enter 5 and 5 for width and height (px gets entered
automatically), resolution is empty. It crops to 5 by 5 pixels, dpi
stays as it is.
...

but now it is to aspect ration of dimensions, dpi is the same but the cropped part is resized to the width and height dimensions - even though the cop selection tool willhappilly cover a tiny bit or the whole image.

Bad dream maby.
