I'm seeing several threads on this, so I wanted to stop by and help my fellow photogs. Before I understood that this is a memory card problem and NOT a camera problem, I bought and returned a P1000. I apologize to the vendor for that (though I didn't name names anywhere).
My second camera, bought somewhere else, had the same problem. Both were using the same brand new sandisk card, 64 GB, plenty fast -- which I assumed to be bullet proof. I sent an email to Nikon support, which was answered in less than a day. They gave several suggestions, the first of which was to try a new card. (I had already tried their other suggestions, which were to format the card, etc...). Skeptical, I ran out to the store and bought a new SD card, 29 days left to return my 2nd P1000.
Viola. It has worked flawlessly from that point on. I'm having a lot of fun with the camera. I shoot wildlife, and I love having that super long lens on a body that is actually hike able.
Here is why the problem is confusing:
-- The *bad* SD card will work fine in a computer. You will be able to offload your photos with no issues.
-- The camera will boot up correctly sometimes, and sometimes not. It doesn't matter how many times you format the card, or reset camera to factory settings.
Which Cards to get:
The camera came out in 2018. SD cards are much faster now. Notice in the tests posted here, the camera maxes out at about 34MB/sec. So you don't need the most expensive 180-300 MB/s cards -- the camera cannot read/write that fast. Just get the less expensive ones with specs more like 2018. You'll still be able to capture videos and bursts.
Sandisk has a lifetime guarantee on their SD cards. I'm in the process of exchanging my *defective* one, that weirdly loves computers but doesn't like Nikon.

I hope this helps clear up some of the confustion.
