So, does anyone have any technical opinions about why continuous autofocus is not implanted in the Canon 5Dmkii or the Canon 7D? Is this a lens issues? Will new lenses have to be created to make this work? It seems like Panasonic is able to do this with there 4/3 sized sensor dlr camera, but unless I am mistaken, the lenses were designed specifically for this. Does anyone think canon can get this to work with there existing lenses?

You can expect that within the next year, some D-SLRs and some new lenses, will solve the limitations on control and settings in HD video mode. The HD video feature in D-SLRs has become very popular with many people who previously used mostly HD camcorders. Read the forum about this at DV Info. Now that the interest has been established among customers, the manufacturers will provide fully functional HD video in the next generation of some D-SLR models.
The reason autofocus was not well-implemented in the current models, is simply because they were rushed to market, to avoid being left behind in this newly-discovered area of interest.

I don't think you should need a special lens. After all, the 7D can do somewhat of a "continuous" autofocus in AI Servo mode for still shots. The same should work for video as well, albeit with AF noise depending on lens used.
The newness factor should also not be a reason, Canon has been able to develop HD video with two EOS bodies prior to the 7d.
Given the above two, I think the only reason why they didn't do it was to avoid cannibalizing their camcorder sales. Lack of autofocus is annoying enough for many to buy a camcorder in addition to the DSLR. I think they are just holding off continuous autofocus as long as possible (I suspect Nikon will be the first to introduce this, since they don't have a dedicated HD camcorder to worry about lost sales). I doubt 7d would ever get a firmware to provide continuous autofocus even if it were trivial. After all, given all that they stuffed into 7d, they need to hold out something for 7d Mark II.
