Computer not recognizing DVD or CD drive

I had a screwup here with my dvd and cd recently. My computer casecover was off as I was working on something inside, anyhow a day later I decided to put the cover back on with the computer running (not real smart I know) and the cover contacted the wires inside while pushing the cover in.

I rebooted my computer and got an error on the drives. At this point my computer won't recognize either of the drives. I"ve tried totally unhooking both drives while the machine is off (data and power cables)) then rebooting and shutting down again, rehooking cables back up and rebooting again but nothing happens.

I've checked all the cables for bent prongs and such and everything seems alright. The bay on the dvd will open but nothing on the cd player, like there is no power going to it. With power getting to the dvd but not the cd I"m thinking maybe something is wrong with the power supply or maybe the cable itself, it doesn't sound like the data cable anyhow, but who knows.

Does anyonw have any suggestions for what I could try to see what might be wrong here? I guess I could see if I could get another drive or cables from someone to see if that works.

Any answers would be appreciated, thank you.

Yes, I pulled the cable out and checked that also. I didn't see anything wrong with it from just doing a visual check.

On some IDE cables, you need to place the master drive at the end of the cable.

Yes, actually that is the way it was hooked up initially, I just rehooked it back up the same way.

I just can't seem to figure this one out, not that i'm any kind of expert, far from it, it's just a real pain in the butt.

It often works to go into the control panel~hardware~device manager, highlight the drives(s), and hit delete. Then reboot. The system will find and reinstall the drivers. This should work, unless of course you've fried something, but we don't like to even think about that.

I"ve been in the device manager and it doesn't list the drives at all. The computer doesn't recognize, list, or even have a clue that they are there. As for something being fried....I think it's my brain!

i would check the power cable as one of the wires may have come loose

inside the molynex connector

check each individual wire by pushing down on them into the plug and see if this gets your dcrom to come on .

if not try another plug swap one from a known working device.

that should get the cdrom working ... if not then you may have a more serious issue

if you get the cdrom working reexamine that plug and make extra sure that all the wires are seated properly in that connector as one may have pulled...

First make sure all the cable are pluged in all the way. Check the motherboard side too, sometimes it just loose. Swap the power cable from harddrive or dvd drive with the cd drive to see if it work. If not, you can bring your cd/dvd drive to someone else computer to try too. Check the bios setting if you know how.

What is your setup. In otherwords hd1-master1, cd-slave1, hd2-master 2, dvd, slave2 etc. Have you tried hooking the drives up on the other ide channel and or changing jumpers to change between master and slave, to try and see if it is the drive, or if it is a particular ide channel that is out (possibly due to a bad or damaged cable)? You of course would want to try a diffrent power plug if the drawer doesn't even open.

I was away for a couple days but I did use the extra power connector from the floppy drive and put it into my DVD. The drive now works so it is the power cable assembly that went bad.

The power cable assembly that feeds both the dvd and the cd players is directly wired into the power supply. I was just wondering if this meant if I want to use those two cables will I have to get a new power supply then? I do have the extra power connector from the floppy but that is it, so I wouldn't have one for my other cd player.

I'm not sure what a Y-cable is Paul? Are you talking about adding an extension adapter of some kind to existing cable?

A Y connector is a little molex splitter. You plug one of your power connectors into it and you have two connectors out of it. They are about 3-4 inches long, available at computer supplies for about 2 bucks. Handy to have around. If it were me though I'd be wary of that power supply and be thinking about a new one. Newegg.com has lots of decent reasonably priced ones. I've had good luck with the Sparkle's.
