What I find interesting:

.70x 2.36Mdot EVF is pretty close to the .71x 2.36M dot in the A7 II if you want a comparison.

the image sensor sniffs like the 6D Mark II. same physical size, same number of actual pixels and useable pixels, same ISO ranging.

No 10-bit or Log, unsurprisingly. I’m assuming the datasheet would mention if DPAF was limited to 1080p and lower. USB charging is also a no show, but makes sense this wouldn’t first appear for Canon in this particular body. 250 shots is a bit oof, but expected given the battery.

Still need to wait and see how good the 4K is, whether the DR is improved over the 6Dii sensor, and I’m personally curious if these will still be made in Japan. But at $1299, none of those would be dealbreakers.

edit: PDF lists AF at EV -5, vs -6 for R

Also interestingly enough they removed the 720p120 that’s available in both the R and the cheaper M50.

It even has an intervalometer. Do you think we will get this on the R as well?

I'm really glad the intervoltamter is back (from the 6D2) . Maybe Canon considers that a beginner feature, like scene modes? Also I saw (is it confirmed?) that the RP has focus stacking, I would love that, as a not highly skilled photographer, where as a skilled enthusiast or pro doesn't need the camera to do that, like HDR.

Biggest surprise for video is it does continuous eye-af which even the R can't do!

Continuous eye-AF was my biggest wish. Now I wish it IS good! 😀

My other wish (7-10 fps in servo) didn't come true, but maybe in the future...

The use of the LP-E17 battery is bad news. My M6 sucks it dry very rapidly on top of which there are still no fully decoded 3rd party batteries available in spite of the fact that it's been on the market for a long time. The Canon original costs approx £45 in the UK and you'll need a handful to be happy while filming 4K.

Hmmm... i still hope the R will get it. Both the interval meter and the focus stacking as well. Anyway the RP does look very promising

What I find interesting:

.70x 2.36Mdot EVF is pretty close to the .71x 2.36M dot in the A7 II if you want a comparison.
I experienced a 2.36Mdot EVF resolution in the add-on acceessory for the Sony NEX-5N. The resolution was alright, but in that iteration the excessive contrast, black crush, and low refresh rate (esp. as environmental lighting decreased) was annoying.

Then I experienced the 1.44Mdot EVF resolution in the Sony A6000. The loss in resolution was quite noticeable and took away from the joy of shooting. However, all the other attributes were greatly improved.

I guess this is to say that 2.36Mdot of resolution is sufficient (but it's not to say that more won't be better) for me. However, there's more to an EVF than just resolution... and it is even possible that those attributes may be affected by resolution. I guess you have to get the EOS R and RP (and even the A7II) side-by-side to really suss out the differences that aren't communicated in specs.

It looks great, but lack of USB charging and a max of 4000 shutter speed is a bit of a joke for a camera that is over $1000.

I want servo eye AF in the R!

gRRRR

...but to be expected at that amazing price-point. I may have to get an RP to complement my 6D2, if only to save the hassle of changing lenses on occasion!

Nicely done, Canon!

At least you get eye af in servo...

Oh man.. bummer R does not have it.
I wouldn’t lose hope it should be something they can ad in firmware.

A game changer at this price.

A few things that seem not mentioned. The LCD screen - does it tilt? Is it a variangle screen? I could not see any mention about it. Could it be fixed?

I could only see continuous eye AF in movie specs not stills focusing specs.

Could it only be for videos?

I did not see any mention of an intervalometer or focus stacking but others mentioned it. Where did they see that listed?

So differences between EOS R and EOS RP seem to be 6D2 sensor, versus 5D4 sensor, better EVF and LCD in EOS R and perhaps variangle LCD screen in EOS R, mag alloy body of the EOS R and overall larger size and top LCD screen.

EOS RP has focus stacking (if confirmed) and continuous Eye AF and perhaps intervalometer.

I presume (perhaps naively) that these extra features are coming in a firmware update to the EOS R in the near future.

For a lot smaller is good in mirrorless.

At $1299 it stands alone as A7iii is $1999 and recently discounted to $1799 (I don't know for how long).

On Amazon right now A7iii is $1998 and Fuji XT3 is $1399.

This will test the Fuji guys "APSc is fine and don't need full frame" viewpoint!

Greg.

I want servo eye AF in the R!

gRRRR
It would seem Canon finished developing it for this model and will add it to the promised firmware update after this new camera is out.

Perhaps they may release the EOS R firmware at the same time as the EOS RP??

Perhaps not.

Greg.

it's a vari angle screen, haven't you seen any of the pics?

I think my copy / paste mixed up.. but it was in the specs. seems hard to copy and paste a table into a forum post for some reason. I'll try again in the next post

I would guess that as well.

I guess its main competition is the A7II and A7 that are usually on some sort of sale. But in reality the touchscreen will bring alot to Canon over those cameras.

trying to make sure I get all the specs in this time.
