Having upgraded from 20D, and used this for few days (bought it on last Saturday 25/8/07) , and have the following opinions
1- Response is faster (autofocus and shutter lag)

2- Shutter feel is better, though without the spring feel from 20D, but it feels alright after using it for 100+ shots
3- Nothing to complain about the WB, Noise

4- Auto ISO is great, though I expect Canon shall issue a new firmware to allow the range of Auto ISO covers 100 to 1600 for all mode

5- Sensor cleaning is good, though already appeared in lower grade 400D, actually I upgrade from 20D is mainly considering this factor

6- Live view is also interesting, but i prefer to use pocket cam to play with it. However, it is quite convenient for pictures taking when using tripod and remote
Noted that it discharges the battery quite fast.

7- Picture mode is also interesting, which i have download some playful special modes (like emerald, clear...) from Canon Web
8- Still no multi-explosure ......

9- Quite a step improvement there are two body buttons shortcut (one is preset to picture style, and another could be assigned to a list of preset function, say quality is the most convenient...but it is soley for live view function if the LView is set on)
10- Foto quality is not stepping forwards conspicuous from 20D.

To short, it is not a worthy upgrade if only focusing on the foto quality. However to this value point (body only HK$8,800.00) and a lot of improvement (decent operational and ancillary technical side) I would recommend this cam to the Canon user, unless you would set all the lens aside and spend more money to wait Nikon D300.

Dear Friends,
The product was announced in web in around last Monday.

and the official product has been shipped and sold open to public on 25 Aug 2007 in Hong Kong.
  • The body only = HK$8,800.00 and with 1 no. 2G CF, foto bag, tripod
  • The kit set (one IS 17-85) = HK$11,800.00 with same gift
thanks.

You need 2-3 month to figure this, actually I am not as happy with 400D cleaning system. Already use Eclipse wet cleaning to clean some spots on sensor, I think that is marketing trick more than real help.

Any comments on the Auto focus?

Feel exciting to share more points.

1- The location of the power switch is not welcoming. I would prefer the same from 400D, Nikon or Pentax, since it is ready to switch it on by the first finger in one single hand. Now it drives my two hands to power it on.
2- The same button feels flimsy.......somehow maybe larger size is better

3- The operation interface menu, maybe from 1D line (since I have not ....no money... to learn from that series), improves from 20D since it now categorizes via pull down icon rather than a long column of command list in 20D

4- One quite little but helpful improvement side is on the playback, which you can notice where you have set the focus point during the shot, shown in a small read dot.
5- you can use the old handgrip

6- Microdrive is not recommended to use when u use LView.....still question about this

7- If you have canon lens with AF-stop button, you can set this button for several modes...like change it from AF-single to AF-servo....very convenient

8- Spot explosure introduced (compared to 20D, though there is it already in 30D)
9- Tilting correction (gimmick point to me only)

10- ah......there is a great mode ...i.e. together with RAW there is a format sRAW plus JPEG. Smaller size of raw (in about 3M and 1/4 smaller in file size)
11- Exchangable focusing plate

thanks.

Frankly opinion to this point.....

1- Speed = feel faster, but no remarkably improvement since I feel 20D works well
2- Accuracy in low light = appreciated.

Regret to tell you that I usaullly use the Spot focus mode, thus the new or improved area focus means nothing to me at most occasion.

However, when i take a group picture, i will use A-depth mode in the right button which most of the coverage will be in the correct focus.

thanks.

Thanks. A few questions:
1) How is the view finder for shooting?
2) How well can you see the camera info on the view finder?
3) How easy is it to use the customizable buttons? What can you set?

For customerization, there are about four aspects

1- Three buttons on the left top panel - which is easy to set and mainly for your choice of foto-quality, contrast.....set to your taste and store in this three rooms.

2- The back side of the body - which there is a button named "SET" which in general menu selectio page this is a button of confirmation on your selection. However during the ready mode, it could be set to switch to, as i remember, five special mode up to your assignation, which i set quality.

Noted : however if you switch on LView is on, the set button is the shortcut exclusively for starting LView mode.

3- In the menu page, you can also register particular function choices (up to about 6 to 7) in the last icon pull down, thus to create a secondary shortcut to the hot commands you used to adjust.

4- The back side of the body - there is also a preset hotkey to switch on the picture style mode.

The viewfinder.
-Cover more than I expect from comparison with 20D

-It looks good, and u can change the focus plates (there are two alternatives in the market) to the camera
-The information could be easily read in the viewfinder.
