Sorry I seem to be being a bit of a pain in the neck today but...... It would be a good idea to clarify if any changes are to be made to the above as the result of recent threads now rather than much later in the process after entries have been made!

You're not being a pain at all! I updated the rules regarding the voting and signatures on the entries. Anyone, follow up here or by email if you have any comments. In a nutshell, you must vote for at least five entries (by the time voting ends), and any incomplete votes will be shuffled to the bottom of the scale (i.e., if you only vote for 1-5, they will be moved to 6-10 before assigning points when voting ends).
Rules: http://fujimugs.com/challenge/rules.php

As far as frames go, I'm content with leaving that under the general "post-processing" category - if someone wants to add one, it's the same issue (to me, at least) as any other post-processing. It's up to the voters to decide if they like it or not. If it makes sense to add a specific note about frames in the rules, I'll add something (give me a suggestion - anyone).

And for the background, I haven't really given it any thought. So far, it's white. If something else is more popular, and if there are indeed good reasons to make it gray, I'll work on it. For now, I'm being lazy about it since many of the images (and all the thumbnails) are created with a white background to match. That's not a big deal, though - I can always update those.

I realised that that may be the case in an earlier thread..

I say you need a break this time around and any changes should be implemted in Challenge 9 after a consensus is reached!

Sounds good to me. Besides, I'll probably spend most of this new entry period working on the voting/commenting pages. I already have some things in the works, and a few more things I want to get done by the time voting starts.

I ´m sorry if this was previously discussed but what about a weekly challenge such as in http://www.dpchallenge.com ?

This way we could have a challenge to work on and another to vote on at the same time (week). I suppose this would be too much work or might not get as many pictures. Anyway, it seems like there are more and more fellow fujier´s participating on the challenges and it might be possible.

What´s the idea on that subject?

Dan, if you're looking for a consensus then I s'poze it's my duty to speak my mind. Right or wrong, I have the last couple challenges decided that a simple frame gives a slight edge -- and have therefore been adding them. However, I would much rather see a level playing field where frames are simply not allowed. Frankly I see no reason that pix cannot stand alone, unadorned by a frame -- that's what it's all about IMHO.

Secondly, My wife and I have mentioned for several challenges now how the brighter photos stand out better and would likely attract more votes.

I hadn't resolved a solution until the white background was mentioned. I feel a hex c0c0c0 background would be the most neutral, aesthetically and technically.

I hope others that feel this way (on either point) will also speak up.

That is so great because as it happens I am just about off to make some pictures on a very related subject which I have been looking forward to for some time ....

Hopefully I will get one that will be suitable for this and will look forward to seeing the entries a great deal.

I've already spoken up enough, but I agree with you 100%. It's Dan show, I certainly respect his decision on this.

For voting pruposes, I will simply imagine the pic without a frame and vote on content. Easier said than done, really.

I agree with you on background color as well, and I also agree it makes a rather significant difference.

Thanks for the info... I'll mess around with the #C0C0C0 bkgnd and see how it looks.

I am looking foward to this challange subject. I have in mind a road, but it will require a road trip! :) Gotta love a challange that gives me an extra excuse to get out of town!!

And to DanWolf, I would like to mention that you are making it a little better as we have each challange! The changes so far have been good ones. Thanks for being there for us, and for all you do!

You're welcome!
Thanks,

This is the road I was already going to :-)
http://www.lemans.org/2003/24auto/index_gb.shtml

I dont know if I will get any pics suitable for a challenge and perhaps now I have mentioned it I should not submit them anyhow ... but its a truly great piece of french road imho

at that website you can see that there are some pro photographers there already making images .... well I dont actually want to make any like you can see there so far ... its funny how they could want to make them like that ... I guess thats their target usage .. mine is rather different ....

Looking forward to it .... packing now :-)
Just me .. I am free yipee

I received an email that brought up the idea of a disclaimer on the web site saying that I'm not responsible for any injuries that occur while someone is taking a photo for the challenge, etc. The author didn't say I should add this - just mentioned the idea.

I had never thought of this, but it's an interesting observation, given the increasing lack of personal responsibility here in the U.S. (not directed at anyone involved here - just a general observation IMHO).

I don't think I'll put anything on the web site, but I'll just say it here: When you're taking a photo for this challenge, please don't get hit by a car, truck, motorcycle, scooter, bicycle, tricycle, train, airplane, bus, skateboard, trolley, etc. Did I leave anything out? ;)
