Challenge 8 Results....

Are you serious? I'm in the top 3 in both!! I'm shocked since I know some people were voting for Night Falls but it didn't seem like nearly enough. Who would have thought that a "cheesy" water fall shot (reference to a comment in another thread) would have done so well ;-)

Thanks everyone (especially our gracious host) for the effort put into this and hurry up already with the next topic! Please make it "Dogs I have known" ;-)

MOST IMPROVED ARTIST:

ALL THE PARTICIPANTS OF CHALLENGE 8

Since there were only a very few people who actually voted in this
category, I felt that I would not declare any one “most improved”
but state that each of you know how you have improved with these
challenges that should be reward enough. It is my hope, however,
that as we get higher in the number of challenges, this category,
if still present, will be a very important and special one for the
individual that gets selected.

The Last Words…

I would like to say to all the those who participate in these
challenges, that it has been an honor and a privilege ( and some
work…;)) to have been the host of Challenge 8. I myself have felt
that I have learned a lot from the STF and seen myself improve
tremendously. Since my first entry, Dark Angel…to Pieces of Me to
Do No Harm… I can see that I feel in a little more control of the
camera than vice versa.
I would like to be the first to congratulate John Zwink for a
wonderful entry in Too-Late Commute and as the next host of
Challenge 9. John…I hereby hand the digital baton to you… I wish
you all the best.

Thank you and congrats to all the celebrated artists here and in
the challenges…you people all deserve the praise….

Thanks, Debadguy, for all your hard work hosting the challenge. I almost think I would be afraid to win because of all that must be involved in running it ;-)

And thank you to all who participated for voting my "Feeding Frenzy" as the #2 in the Exhibition category! It makes having my husband and mother-in-law wait for an hour for me while I tried to capture the right mouths all worth it (although I'm not sure they would agree). Actually, I really debated about whether or not to submit it as I know it's pretty bizarre... but I get a kick out of the picture and I'm glad I did.

I also wanted to say that I truly appreciated having a few people nominate my kaleidoscope pictures for most innovative (as well as the kind comments) -- I had been a bit disappointed that very few people had even looked at them (judging by number of hits). I know they weren't spectacular, but I really worked hard trying to get the right shots (thank goodness I wasn't using film!). Then being Photoshop-challenged, I didn't know how to resize them and put them all together, but I saw something called Photomerge, and after at first getting a composite of all three images, I got the hang of using it. So for me, it was a real learning experience on many levels. Thus, my gratitude.

Anyway, looking forward to the next challenge. They really force me to stretch my limits and try things I would never have attempted without the nudge.--Helen--- http://community.webshots.com/user/helenpb_

Exceptional photos throughout the competition. The winners deserve their wins (and so do others who didn't, IMHO). I felt overhwelmed by the imagination, technical skill, and effectiveness of most of the shots and had a very tough time narrowing it from 14 or so to 3.

Congrats again... these challenges sure are helping me learn, and i know most of us feel that way too.

One thought: perhaps let a little time go by before starting the next one. I need to chase clients as well as photo ops!

eric
Wow. Hot damn, even. :-)

I can't say I expected this to happen, less than six weeks after I
got my first digital camera (though, what a camera it is). I was
actually in kind of a bad mood tonight, but not anymore!

* * *

I'd like to thank my F707, my tripod, my... oh wait. Nevermind.
Thanks to my dad, really. Oh, thanks to Dee for the suggestion to
rotate the picture a little--I had overlooked the precise alignment
when I first posted it.

* * *

Information about the shot, for those that may have missed it the
first couple times: the exposure was 10 seconds at F/8, ISO 100. No
extra light of any type. Taken full manual. 15.3 mm focal length,
focused at infinity. Rotated and cropped slightly, then used Auto
Levels, and that was that.

* * *

Brief bio on myself and my cameras, so long as I have the chance:

I'm a senior in computer engineering at the University of Michigan,
Ann Arbor. I have been into photography a fair bit for a long time.

First camera was a Canon Mega Zoom 76, which I still have (and use
when I don't want to carry something larger).

First camera I learned to use was an Olympus OM-1 (my father's).
It was a popular camera, but for those that don't know, it's an
all-manual SLR (only electronic part is the lightmeter, which
eventually failed). Had a complement of lenses and a Vivitar flash.

Later my dad got a Canon Elan II, which is a wonderful camera, I
think. A Canon Speedlite 540EZ and Tamron 28-300 lens round out
the package. That's the camera I've used most, really.
Ironically, its light meter broke also, but it's since been
repaired. The 540EZ flash is unbelievable for a handheld unit, and
the Tamron lens is very convenient, though not very fast of course.

Then, December 7th, for my birthday, I got the F707 (after much
research and debate, including some typical newbie questions here a
while back). Picked up a 128 MB MS, a couple filters, case, and
tripod just after Christmas, and came back to school ready to go.
A week later, I went out late at night to take some pictures, with
the Challenge only partially in mind, and Too-Late Commute was
captured.

* * *

Anyway, I'm not all that experienced here, and so I'll probably be
getting in touch with debadguy about what to do next. I may very
well start a thread to ask for suggestions before the next contest
gets under way, but I think this one went quite smoothly (I haven't
been around for any of the previous ones).

Thanks again,

John Zwinck

I too would like to thank debadguy for all his hard work. I would also like to congratulate all the winners, you guys/gals took some great photos.

I want to say how much I appreciate the STF community for being a place that welcomes and encourages everyone to be a better photographer and a better person. I have never come across a web community that has been so open to newcomers and shown such a high level of respect for all members. This is special and I hope it continues in the future.

That being said I also agree with an earlier post (I can't remember who) that encouraged us to begin a more critical dialogue when critiquing pictures while maintaining the civility that has come to make this place great. We will all learn more about taking better photos that way.

Thanks from a newbie.--D http://www.pbase.com/crapitecture/

Thanks for another challenging challenge. Looking forward to having a bit more time to play with the challenges next month when work slows down a bit.

Once again, thanks for putting in so much effort for our benefit - had lots of fun.

Mike.

Wow, with all that voting driving me crazy while I tried to keep track (I can just imagine what you went through debadguy!) I was holding my breath -- I want to place, not win, and being tied for 2nd place for a short time there was so exciting - a three way tie for second place?

I was very pleased that ALL my entries received votes, and that my anonymous entry, Walking Alone Together was tied for 4th Place. This was an exciting challenge and one that kept me tied to the computer checking both galleries. I was simply floored and amazed at the variety of entries and the imagination displayed.

To John, Congratulations, that was a great shot, even more amazing with your limited experience with a digital camera. I've been shooting digital for close to 4 years now.

To AVB for his thought provoking post on the challenge which got very well deserved huge replies -- thank you too!

Debadguy, welcome back to the ranks of participant, congratulations for a challenge well run. I really liked the two separate galleries, it helped a great deal, and I'm glad they were open to non-sony camera users too.

To all who entered: it takes a lot of courage sometimes to enter a challenge like this and I hope the experience was rewarding and will encourage others to enter. While it may make more work for the hosts, all of us will learn so much more.

To me, I'm going to try not to be such a tough critic of my own work as Camera Shy received a lot of supportive comments and made the top ten!

There were so many pictures I liked and it's so sad that "there can be only one," but John's photo was my top choice so I'm glad it won.

Debadguy, thanks for posting the top ten. That was extremely interesting how many photos were tied! And, I didn't realize I had two photos in the top ten!

Now, breath, relax, get the creative juices flowing again and onward -- to the next challenge!

Dee

I looked again, Oh my gosh, all three of my entries made top ten! Now I'm really encouraged! Thanks everyone!

Dee

Hey debadguy,

I'm not sure if I'm not understanding the way points were tallied, or if January Thaw was overlooked. I hate doing this, because its self-serving, but at the same time, recognition where recognition is due.

Unless I'm figuring something wrong, January Thaw received a total of 24 points. 20 if you don't include honorable mentions.

Am I missing something? Did I configure incorrectly?

Thanks in advance for the clarification.

You are right, you were tied with Walking Alone Together for quite awhile.

If I find it difficult keeping tabs on voting, although it was a casual keeping tabs, I can imagine how difficult it is to do it for real.

I'd like to print out the top ten for my private, personal use, and I'm glad I waited because I wouldn't have wanted to miss your photo.

Dee

Great work on January Thaw...however I did not include the points received for honorable mention in the main "Electing a new Host" category. The points used to decide the New Host was the 3 sub categories of Most Impressed, Very Impressed and Quite Impressed only. I used the single point for honorable mention to figure out who the most honorably mentioned was. If I were to include all the points together, yes you would have 24 points, but then Merry-Go-Round would have 27 points and Night Falls would have 26 points leaving the top 3 positions intact...

...I apologize for the confusion...my goal was to try to recognize as many of our artists as possible by increasing the number of catagories and even publishing the top ten...unfortunately it is not a perfect system...and we are learning with each challenge...I hope the great quality of your work continues...

received for honorable mention in the main "Electing a new Host"
category. The points used to decide the New Host was the 3 sub
categories of Most Impressed, Very Impressed and Quite Impressed
only. I used the single point for honorable mention to figure out
who the most honorably mentioned was. If I were to include all the
points together, yes you would have 24 points, but then
Merry-Go-Round would have 27 points and Night Falls would have 26
points leaving the top 3 positions intact...

...I apologize for the confusion...my goal was to try to recognize
as many of our artists as possible by increasing the number of
catagories and even publishing the top ten...unfortunately it is
not a perfect system...and we are learning with each challenge...I
hope the great quality of your work continues...
