I feel that it would be nice from you not to post the picture of their kid. They didn't like it, did they ? So .... don't do it !!!

thats a pretty fine line - i think if you hadnt asked, you would
have been ok but once the parents explicitly told you they
disapproved, i would not use the pic...

but it is your call

Hi,

The subject really compelled me to try to enter a competition for
first time! Thank you, Andy!

I uploaded two pictures; one of them does not have exif (lost it in
the b&w conversion), but the other did.. how come it doesn't show
up in the page?

Also, I have a third picture I'd like to put up, but have a very
guilty conscience in doing so.. after I took it, I showed the
parents the picture, and both looked at me and said, "we wish you
wouldn't take pictures of our daughter." I don't know if I should
upload it to the competition??

Thankyou for your nice comments. It's very important to me to have my work apreciated by a pro like you (and others). It realy have been a huge encoragement and I'm going to trie to continue to learn more about photography. I'm learning that the photography can be more than just take pictures of things. I feel that the next level of photography is plain art. The art of playing with light, forms and colors. The art of delighting the eyes, the enjoyment of seeing things.

challenge 64 topic: who are the people in your neighborhood?

(with apologies to the creators of sesame street!)

we run into all sorts of people each and every day. now, you get
to photograph them! people shots are are equal parts "piece of
cake" and "impossible." trying to capture the essence of that
person, in their character or their job or at a particular scene in
"your neighborhood," is what makes this a particularly
"challenging" task. yes - i know this will be difficult for many
of you, and a totally new experience for some. that's the point of
being "challenged" right?

now you might be thinking - "oh no! .. i can't photograph total
strangers!" my answer? sure you can! you can practice that
famous question: "excuse me, sir (ma'am)...may i take your
photograph?" you'll be surprised at the number of times folks will
blush and say "okay" sure, you can also photograph folks you
know, too. some of you are more bold than others - and so you can
share the tips and techniques involved in this fascinating type of
photography.

people are everywhere, in small towns and big cities..so there's no
shortage of subjects to shoot ...er... photograph. here are some
ideas that come to mind: gas station attendant (if you still have
them!); the fedex guy; the woman who serves you your coffee each
day; the traffic cop; firefighters; the mayor; local thugs (from a
distance, please!); the piano teacher; that old lady at the park
who feed the ducks; the town "nut" (yes, every town has one - or
two!); the traveling salesperson; perhaps the neigborhood kids
playing hoops; the town doctor; the city clinic staff; a fisherman
at the local stream or bridge...two lovers admiring a beautiful
sunset... well, by now you get the idea.

this is an opportunity to stretch our imagination, and our
photographic and our interpersonal skills. in addition, it's a
great chance for us to get to know the people from towns and cities
all around the world! i'm excited to see what you all come up with

• i know that the stf is an extremely imaginative crowd! so

please get involved, have a lot of fun, and share your photos ;>

Challenge 64 begins at 12:00 am EST (New York time) on Thursday,
March 11, 2004. You will have two full weekends to obtain images.

These guidelines are meant to help things run smoothly. Thanks for
reading this stuff again:

• Four (4) images are allowed in each of the two galleries

(Eligible and Exhibition).

• Those that prefer to have critiques of their photos be more

"critical", feel free to mark the image title with an asterisk ( ).

• Please put your name and a unique title on each of your image

thumbnails. It really helps to keep voting problem issues to a
minimum.

• Please resize your images to no larger than 800 pixels on the

longest side before uploading to pBase... can be larger if a
panoramic image. This cuts down on too much usage, makes is easy
for folks on dialup, and it helps to preserve the quality of your
image upload for best viewing.

• Please don't move images around in the galleries...respect

first-come-first-serve. If you alter an image in any way, please
indicate that a change was made to the original when reposting it.
You can repost an image into its original spot if it's the same
image (that's just been altered). Any new images should be placed
at the end of the gallery. This should avoid any confusion...and
everyone will be treated equally.

• Please keep your questions and concerns posted in this thread for

best response. One of us will address them as soon as possible.

• Challenge time period will run from 12:00 am EST (New York time),

Thursday March 11, 2004 through Monday, March 22, 2004, at 10pm EST
(New York time). Time tables will be posted in the galleries. A
separate voting thread will be posted shortly after the end of the
Challenge period.

• Eligible images must be taken with a Sony digital camera and

within the challenge time period. The winner of this gallery will
host the next Challenge. All entries should include a date
indicating when the photo was taken; the "exif" data attached would
be ideal(if available). "Exif" data is a big help to a lot of
viewers for a variety of reasons. If the "exif" data is not
preserved, try writing it into your caption (by referring to the
original photo's "exif" data that should be available before doing
any photo processing). At the least, please include the date the
photo was taken on all the eligible photos. This is a popular
request...so I'm passing along your requests here. THANKS,
everybody, for your friendly cooperation.

• Exhibition images can be obtained with any camera at any time. If

you do not want to host the next Challenge, this is the gallery you
should post your images to.

• Those not familiar with uploading images to pbase can view this
