*** Challenge 53 - Architecture - Beyond the Ordinary

Lee,

I like the description you gave here. But I'm stlll having trouble producing a photo that I like that still fits the bill. I've posted 2, but can't really get excited about them.

I'm in Japan this week ( and part of next), so I'm hoping to get some time this weekend to produce some photos of buildings that I like.

What is architecture?

Architecture is more than just a building. It is the sum of the
whole and the beauty of the
parts. It is light, color, texture, drama, compression, expansion,
rhythm, pattern,
repetition, repetition, details, connections, and details. All of
these things make a great
buiding and great photography.

Many of these tools also make great photographs. Architecture has
been called frozen music, but I think it is more closer to
photography.

Hmm.....then maybe I need to start looking at things differently cos I am having a real struggle with this topic. No entries from me yet, cos the ones I shot on the weekend just didn't do it for me. And no time or daylight after work. Maybe this weekend will bring something promising....but sorry, building, architecture, frozen music or whatever...just doesn't excite my eye through the lens like other subjects do.

Don't forget that architecture is not only from the outside. But the inside also. And is also the enjoyment of people using the building or spaces.

Then my suggestion would be try to capture the light and shadows created by elements of the building. Also, architects design the inside of buildings.

Hi all,

As I mentioned in a comment on a Mary Ann picture, I've made a couple of velvia actions based on instructions found elsewhere here in the forums.

I have posted it to one of my sites and you can use them freely.

The file is named Nugar's.atn

It has several actions, most of which will be of no use to you. The purple fringe action is not mine, but I didn't know how to get it out of there.

Basically, the Velvia action creates two adjustment layers and saturate the colors. After they are created, you can tweak them for better results.

The second Velvia action, creates a second layer which is a lot more saturated than the original one. What I do is that I tweak that layer's opacity.

Try both actions on an image to see which works better for that image.

BTW, the action "thirds" produces a Rule of Thirds grid to check against that composition rule :)

I hope these actions are useful to you all.

The file is here: http://saludbucal.net/gg/Nugar 's.atn

Best regards,

Humberto (aka Nugar)

It's raining (at last!!!!) so not a lot of shadows right now. And any buidling worth photographing from the inside is open only during business hours....the hours when I am stuck at work.

Maybe I'll try for some Australian heritage architecture on Sunday. I'm planning to shoot the local Anzac parade, which quite conveniently finishes right outside the oldest pub in town.

I was watching a video on I. M. Pei last weekend. He stated he was not sure if he like his design for the Rock and Roll hall of fame, until he saw it open with people inside. People add to the experience and photograph. They give scale and perspective.

The pub would make a great place to shoot some local flavor.

Gayle,

I'm also having a difficult time with this subject and I posted the challenge. Although I think there are already some great images posted. Especially the ones that have some human interest associated with it.

I suppose what I was trying to get at when posting this challenge is that we all have to live and work in the cities or structures that we design and what is it about them that either makes us feel an affinity for a place, or want to move away. Actually, I really liked the description that went along with Jude's pic in Exhibition titled Skeletal Barn.

I realize that this is a difficult subject and I hope I'm up to the task of providing at least one image that presents what I'm trying to get at (Finally getting to shoot this weekend) and if worst comes to worst, I'll end up in a good pub. Actually, I think I'll pick a pub that has a nice bar to shoot.

I think that architects sometimes use many of the tools we try to use as photographers to lift the spirit or focus us into a certain mood. Others create abomonations that have no reason being constructed in the first place. Good or bad, we have to live in these places and have some feeling towards them. I think the challenge is to try and define and capture the "mood" that we created for ourselves.

Hope working on the lighting or shadows and textures works for you.

Cheers

Mark

WOW; I had to fish this on the 4th page!
Here is my proposal for Challenge 53

Architecture - Beyond the Ordinary

Everybody normally works and lives in very ordinary and common
structures that you give little notice to. There are times, though
that you pass by a building or structure and something about it
stirs up an emotion, be it a feeling of power, beauty, calm,
disgust etc. The purpose of this challenge is to try to capture
those structures that are built by man, be it either buildings,
bridges, gardens (landscape architecture), windows, doors or water
features that bring up those feelings that are beyond the ordinary
structures you see on a daily basis. Even negative feelings can be
included. You can name the photos anything but it would be nice to
have some sort of description as to why you feel this form of art
creates something special for you. The features can be related to
color, textures, lighting, patterns, form or any of the various
tools the architect uses to create his unique expression to the
building. There are also no restrictions on whether the structures
are urban or rural, modern or historic.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

The Canon Talk Forum Challenges are open to everyone so please
participate. You don't win anything (the eligible entry winner
picks the next challenge topic and sets up the galleries and
moderates the challenge), but it can be a fun way to practice your
photography and get some feedback.

Eligible Gallery entries must taken with a Canon digital camera and
be taken during the specified time period.

Exhibition Gallery entries can use any camera and be taken at any
time.

You may post a maximum of 3 photos in each gallery.

Photo by photo, please share your comments with your fellow
participants. Challenges reach their full potential when the
dialogue becomes as important as the photos themselves.

Those who enjoy more plainspoken and critical comments on their
work should mark their title(s) with an asterisk ( )
