Here is my proposal for Challenge 53

Architecture - Beyond the Ordinary

Everybody normally works and lives in very ordinary and common structures that you give little notice to. There are times, though that you pass by a building or structure and something about it stirs up an emotion, be it a feeling of power, beauty, calm, disgust etc. The purpose of this challenge is to try to capture those structures that are built by man, be it either buildings, bridges, gardens (landscape architecture), windows, doors or water features that bring up those feelings that are beyond the ordinary structures you see on a daily basis. Even negative feelings can be included. You can name the photos anything but it would be nice to have some sort of description as to why you feel this form of art creates something special for you. The features can be related to color, textures, lighting, patterns, form or any of the various tools the architect uses to create his unique expression to the building. There are also no restrictions on whether the structures are urban or rural, modern or historic.

The gallery is located at

RULES AND GUIDELINES

The Canon Talk Forum Challenges are open to everyone so please participate. You don't win anything (the eligible entry winner picks the next challenge topic and sets up the galleries and moderates the challenge), but it can be a fun way to practice your photography and get some feedback.

Eligible Gallery entries must taken with a Canon digital camera and be taken during the specified time period.

Exhibition Gallery entries can use any camera and be taken at any time.

You may post a maximum of 3 photos in each gallery.

I believe at the moment that the dates for the challenge are hoarked up as shown on the gallery. I'm finally getting away to try and take some pictures, so if any moderators want to check the site and verify I have it up ok, that would be great. Any other items screwups would be great to have pointed out.

I'll get back on tonight to check the dates. The bottom line is I wanted to extend the dates to cover two full weekends to allow time for shots and then vote the week after that.

I'm struggling with Greenwich Mean Time.

Cheers

Okay, Challengers, here's one of my photographic "pet peeves". Well, "pet peeve" may be a bit strong. I thought i'd just mention it here and give you some pointers on what you can do about it.

My Peeve - distortion of the vertical perspective

When photographing vertical elements, like tall buildings, using a wide angle lens, and shooting at an upward angle the perspective gets distorted and sometimes it looks like buildings, chimneys, flag poles etc may fall into each other. This is just the natural "distortion" that the lens adds to the picture. Gee, the current topic sounds custom made to generate a few images just like this.

So I've got a picture that looks a bit funny (well, to my eye it does). How do I correct it?

In Photoshop CS, use the marquee tool to select the entire image. Then click on Edit -> Transform -> Perspective (or Skew). You can now grab the handles on the marquee and stretch the image to reduce the perspective distortion.

In Photoshop Element 1.0 it's Image -> Transform -> Perspective.

Other advanced editing tools will allow you to do the same thing, I just don't know the specifics.

How much correction do you add?

You could make everything truly parallel. Pure Architectural photography tends to do it that way. But that looks as funny to my eye as to much perspective. The answer is, whatever you like. Do a little or do a lot and pick what you like best. Even if you prefer the original image, play with the perspective. There will come a time when perspective correction is exactly what you want to do.

Okay, Professor Pops will get off his soap box now.

Hi Jim. In recent challenges, we've been closing on Tuesday, and starting the vote on Wednesday ie one more day of shooting and only 2 days of voting. Should we change to that.

I'll be on holiday so it doesn't affect me anyway! But 3 days of voting was getting a bit long in the tooth I seem to remember, and the extra day shooting is useful for the weekend stragglers :-)

May need to tweak the booth header script as well yes?

What do you think?

It does look funny when you skew the prespective. The reason is that for example parallel towers will look again parallel, but what ever is between them will appear distorted.

Right now I'm at work, but once I get home, I'll post a couple of examples that show this and made me doubt about posting those pics to exhibition.

BTW, I'm looking around for eligible targets and can't seem to find anything that I like :(

I also have an example where I tried to skew the image to get parallel lines in buildings and have created the problem of distortion in other parts of the image. As you pull pixels apart in one area, they are squeezed together in other parts, so you can only get away with it for som much. The original image cannot have too much convergence to begin with. I'll post an example of this as well. I believe there is a pinch function in photoshop that helps this situation.

Cheers,

Mark

Actually, this is only 2 days (48 hrs) for voting. The voting ends at the start of Thursday GM time, and then give the new winner another day to get things started.

This should give everbody 2 full weekends of shooting. We were occasionally losing some on the front end.

I'll have to contact Jack about the script question. With his changes, I don't know exactly what he needs.

What is architecture?

Architecture is more than just a building. It is the sum of the whole and the beauty of the

parts. It is light, color, texture, drama, compression, expansion, rhythm, pattern,

repetition, repetition, details, connections, and details. All of these things make a great
buiding and great photography.

Many of these tools also make great photographs. Architecture has been called frozen music, but I think it is more closer to photography.
