Challenge 5 Official Thread >> OPPOSITES<<

Opposites was a really good title and I was wondering what other
ideas everyone had on it that they either didn't have time to do or
couldn't get translated to an image.

Anyone got any more??
Yes, I have this idea in my head - can't take it, unless I get my camera back from service today or tomorrow. If that doesn't happen, I'll let you know what it was...

I come from a flat land of horizontal sunlight and horizontal rains...

My daughter had one idea, and I have another. My daughter's idea was to have an old woman looking in a mirror and seeing a young girl. We were going to compromise and use her and me as the models. That sort of changes the tone of the piece, but I think it's still a good idea.

My idea is really more of a Photoshop idea than anything else. I worked out a good orientation at one point, but I'd have to do it again. It involves a pencil and its shadow(s). I know I easily figured out how to do it with two pencils, and I think I may have figured out how to do it with a single pencil also. Essentially, the pencils and shadows are oriented in such a way that it looks like one pencil is drawing the other. Meanwhile, the pencil being drawn is erasing the first one.

Once again, plenty of ideas but the time has run away with me (why can't this one run until the weekend... please!)

So, managed to post one late entry so far... hopefully will get a chance to post another, or two...

I thought about doing that fast and slow thing, except I would have shot a group of cyclists riding past my car on an actual training ride. I ended up riding instead.

Another idea I had, that I actually shot, was one of a metallic utility tower (for high-tension power lines) towering above a bushy tree. I shot it such that it looked like the tower was stepping on the tree, and I was going to call it "Power." This would be the first of two photos. The second would be of a telephone pole next to a freestanding cross of about the same height. I would have called that "Higher Power." Unfortunately, the only way to get a good shot of this was to enter private property, so I gave up on that idea. The first photo wasn't that great on its own, so I submitted my two bird photos instead.

ideas everyone had on it that they either didn't have time to do or

I'll kick off with:

Fast and Slow
My idea for this was to photograph myself either walking, running
or cycling past a stationary sports car. Using a slow shutter speed
and second curtain sync to get a speed trail behind me.

Big and Small
For this one I was thinking of buying a toy double decker bus and
shooting it very close up with a real bus in the distance so that
the real bus was smaller than the toy.

Anyone got any more??

Is it good enough to be entered as a stand alone picture in the electric challenge in CTF which closes in about 4 hours?

Thanks for the information, but the photo is on my home PC, which I won't be able to access until after the CTF challenge ends.

I'll definitely check the CTF forum for future challenges.

Teapot,

The reason why I had the same "Fast and Slow" idea as you is that I actually took a motion-blur cycling photo a few months ago. I was hoping to improve on it, but since I didn't, I've posted the original in Exhibition.

Well I ran out of time to do this last one. But here's what I wanted.

Now this one would be considered a little on the political side but I thought a great shot for opposites could be had if I could get a gay couple to pose for me in front of a Catholic church.

The scene would be as follows: We need a Catholic church that has a ornate front entrance and a high steeple with a cross. The church must also be oriented such that we can get a shadow cast from the cross down onto the sidewalk in front of the church. The couple would stand positioned such that the entrance to the church is in view (slightly out of focus), but the shadow of the cross (in this case upside down) would stand between the couple and the entrance to the church. The couple would be posed in a simple pose showing their affection.

The angle of the shot would need to be played with for maximum effect.

Thoughts?

I don't know about opposites, but as far as an image, it sounds beautiful, moving, sad. Go for it and post it here. :)

Challenge 5: > > OPPOSITES

First off, a big thank you to all who voted for, commented on, or
even looked at my Challenge 4 image, Shadow of Time.

I tried to pick a theme for Challenge 5 that's broad and encourages
people to think and be imaginative. I can't wait to see all of the
great pictures you guys come up with.

the challenge), but it can be a fun way to practice and improve
your photography and get some feedback.

Eligible Gallery entries must taken with a Canon Digital SLR camera
and be taken during the specified time period.

Exhibition Gallery entries can be taken with any camera at any time.

You may post a maximum of 4 photos in each gallery.

Well my EOS10D is still at the service center, so I tried to shoot it with my Canon G2 and posted the image in the eligible gallery instead:

I wanted to try multi-flash. Never used it before...

Thanks. I've added a caption explaining the race, in case people were wondering why a motorcycle was on the track.

Garrett,
It's a good shot, definately works well for the fast slow theme.
Must try it out myself.
