>>>CHALLENGE 38: INANIMATE OBJECTS Official Thread<<<

In a further effort to curb the cheating without really impacting the openess of the challenges too much, maybe it is time to change the password on the galleries, and

1) As each request comes in for the new password log the email and require the dpreview and challenge handles for the particpant (may be the same) - that way an email list corresponding to the nicknames can be generated. ie

Challenge Artist Name DpReview Handle Email

2) Require voters use both their challenge handle and their dpreview handle if they are different ie [CindyD (Sis-Q)] (the mystery voters don't seem to be even registered on dpreview - or use it???)

3) Require voters validate their vote by a simple "voted (nt)" post to the voting thread indicating they have voted. Any votes from a person that doesn't check in will be thrown out. This would make it more of a hassle for last minute friends/family/multiple personalities to vote because they would also have to register at dpreview and that is hard to do from one machine (my daughter and I had to share an account because we couldn't register more than one at dpreview from one machine even with different email addresses). Additionally, it would keep the voting thread active.

The host can have access to the email list and the updated list will be provided to each new host. This will allow the host to make a personal contact if there is an issue with an image, or if a question about the voting needs to be posed.

This won't prevent all cheating, but it would give the host some extra tools useful in gallery administration and make a more closed loop for voting - thus making it easier to identify oddities. I still wouldn't advocate participant-only voting, but at least registered (ie they got the password).

I would also suggest volunteer voting monitors to keep an eye on the voting irregularities since the host has plenty to do.

Excellent suggestions Cindy!!! Now how do we convince everyone that this is what needs to be done?

that could be YOU! haha

This will take some volunteers.

1) Somebody to be the official voter registrar to be the keeper of the list. Right now we have several people who provide the password and that could keep going how it is. But only one person should probably update the list so nothing gets messed up. - thoughts????

2) Several somebodies to be the official voting monitors - to cross reference the voters list and the dpreview validation. There should be an odd number of monitors (3? 5?) since if they don't agree on a disqualification they can vote and not be tied - or should the decision be unanimous or it doesn't stand? And the positions should rotate in my opinion.

Are we up for that commitment????

I learned....

1. That I am not the only person who photographed toilet paper, or considered it as a subject.

2. About a neat optical phenomenon called Newton's Rings (while losing an excuse to upgrade to a 20D). ;)

3. That in some cultures, leaving a broom behind the bathroom door is a way of telling guests who want them to leave.

4. That in Olaf's country, workspaces must have natural light, by law.

5. That alexig does not like doorknobs, or toilet paper, but has a really cool looking green glass.

6. That in the right hands, a comb is FAR more interesting than toilet paper. ;)

7. That I have little to no desire to see someone elses removed teeth.

8. That a probably top-5 Eligble candidate minus EXIF data becomes a probably top-5 Exhibition candidate (Time II).

There are probably others that have slipped my mind, but in all, an education experience.

Should be simple enough. The list could be posted somewhere on the web, password protected. Password could be forwarded to new hosts, giving them access to that information.
2) Require voters use both their challenge handle and their
dpreview handle if they are different ie [CindyD (Sis-Q)] (the
mystery voters don't seem to be even registered on dpreview - or
use it???)
Easy rule that shouldn't be hard to comply with.
3) Require voters validate their vote by a simple "voted (nt)"
post to the voting thread indicating they have voted. Any votes
from a person that doesn't check in will be thrown out. This would
make it more of a hassle for last minute friends/family/multiple
personalities to vote because they would also have to register at

Additionally, it would keep the voting thread active.
This one could be tricky, but if the booth could generate a list of voters automatically (without burdening Jack too much) some copying and pasting into a spreadsheet and then some simple sorting would quickly reveal any voters that didn't validate their vote. Maybe this could be a secondary defense? One used only when oddities were noticed and raised to question?

The automatically booth-generated list could possibly be expanded on, also logging IP, time and points awarded. This list could be publicly available and anyone could look into matters, if so inclined. The more transparent system would help deter cheating.
The host can have access to the email list and the updated list
will be provided to each new host. This will allow the host to
make a personal contact if there is an issue with an image, or if a
question about the voting needs to be posed.
I would also suggest volunteer voting monitors to keep an eye on
the voting irregularities since the host has plenty to do.
I don't know if this would be necessary, as it seems somebody will always care enough to check for cheating. If nobody does - it means it's not an issue. This is the beauty of high transparency: it is possible to cheat, but due to the transparency, the likelihood of being busted is high - hence deterring!

It's not a secret: the country I live in is Denmark (hence the .dk in my handle, Danish domains end with .dk - short for DenmarK). Actually natural light is not even enough: skylights are not good enough - it has to be windows in the exterior walls. Exceptions do exist, like the checkout in the supermarket for example...

Another simple step you've suggested before:

1b) As each request comes in for the new password, the welcome mail with the password could be more elaborate on what is allowed and what is not, like voting on your own images, for example.

Good point I guess. But official monitors could make decisions quickly before a new host is named. If 2 days after the vote somebody brings up something it is more difficult to deal with. Also, maybe somebody would see something but they are hesitant to come forward with their suspicions. Cindy

I get the feeling that people will be far less hesitant to come forward than they have been in the past. But that is just a wild guess on my part.

Additionally, it would keep the voting thread active.
That last sentence is what I want to stress. This would be a really positive side-effect!

I suspect that if it really affected the result of who won the eligible gallery, the guard dogs would definitely not hold back on their barking! Anything less than the winning shot in eligible and it wouldn't matter that it was two days later...

The password for the galleries has changed.

The database of participants needs a cull as many people don't post anymore or email addresses have changed since they joined which makes it a PITA when they need to be contacted!

So you'll all have to request a pass again when the new challenge starts.

Also the old password address is being turned off due to spam.

The new password address will be cslrpass(at)imageattic.net

Just remember to replace (at) with an @ when you send in!

Could the new challenge host please please please remember to make this change in the new challenge thread text.

The winner of the ch38 will have to email for the pass so they can set up the new challenge.

I'll be on hand in the morning (UK time) to help out if need be.
