Challenge 3 is now closed to entries - thank you all for participating! Here is the voting thread, more or less verbatim from Tim's and Clint's directions for the previous challenges.

Voting starts now and will run until Monday, Aug 9, at noon Eastern US time. Results will be announced in a new thread soon thereafter.

PLEASE PLACE ALL VOTES IN A MESSAGE IN THIS THREAD. PLEASE REPLY TO THIS FIRST MESSAGE WHEN YOU VOTE (NOT OTHER MESSAGES FURTHER DOWN THE THREAD).

Voting rules are at:
http://www.pbase.com/kodak_challenge/rules#voting
but for quick reference see below:

Points: You have up to 16 points total to allocate to pictures in each gallery (32 total for both galleries). The winner in each gallery is the picture that attracts the most votes. In case of a tie, the most 4pt votes, then 3, etc will decide.

Assign 4 pts only to your 1st choice: You must assign 4 points to the picture that is your 1st choice in a gallery. This is the minimum requirement for your votes to count for that gallery.

12 remaining pts/gallery: Distribution of the other 12 points in each gallery is optional, but strongly encouraged. You can award 1, 2, or 3 points to each other picture you choose. BUT REMEMBER: only ONE picture in each gallery can be awarded 4 points!

Honourable mentions: We encourage you to make as many honourable mentions & comments as you like for pictures you do not vote for. And please feel free to add critiques and comments with your votes so we can see why you voted as you did.
Ineligible pictures: You cannot vote for your own work.

Assigning equal points: If you assign the same points to more than one picture in a gallery, please list those pictures in the same order as they appear in the gallery to make it easier for the moderator to count the votes.

Voting message format: Here is the format for your voting message in the voting thread:

Competition:
4pts - Title by Artist
(then optionally, but strongly encouraged)
[3, 2 or 1]pts - Title by Artist
[3, 2 or 1]pts - Title by Artist
(etc, to a maximum of 16 points)

Exhibition:
4pts - Title by Artist
(then optionally, but strongly encouraged)
[3, 2 or 1]pts - Title by Artist
[3, 2 or 1]pts- Title by Artist
(etc, to a maximum of 16 points)

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can copy the Title-by-Artist text from the gallery web page and paste it into your post to save typing. Presumably other browsers allow something similar.

Finally: it's considered good manners to vote for both galleries, even if you only entered pictures in one of them. Also, if you did not enter any pictures, you are still allowed to vote in either or both galleries.

Have Fun!

Hi All,

Voting time. I thought Warren was going to enter, anyway, I think we need to make arrangements for the next challenge to include the winner/host. But a big thank you to Warren for hosting and being impartial.

I have been going back and forth trying to figure out which shots stand out, but have found it extremely difficult. Congratulations to all those who have entered I think the quality of work has been excellent.

Now down to business!

Paul

E&OE My disclaimer so I can change this if I made any mistakes.

Here are my votes for the exhibition gallery. I'll post my votes for the Challenge gallery later. I'm sorry to do it this way, but I'm totally unable to decide how to allocate the points. The standard is so high and there are so many I want to vote for. Having to allocate 4 points to one, and only one, makes it harder as there isn't a picture I consider to be 3 or 2 or even 1 points better than any other...hence the indecision.

So, this is for the Exhibition gallery:
4 pts - Blue, surveying the storm by Jono Slack
3 pts - Dreamy Sea" by John Hill
3 pts - Reflections by Kate Westrop
2 pts - Seastacks, low tide by Dave Millier
2 pts - Torrens River Bridge by Paul Rohal
1 pts - Into-the-Mystic by Kate Westrop
1 pts - Virginia Farm by David Fink

Honourable mentions:
Brugge Convent by Janna Burrough
Sketching on the Arno by Jono Slack
"The Swim Team" by Albert Yanowich Jr.
Rockpool at Crackington Haven, by Quentin Bargate
"Brownhill Creek" by Paul Rohal
"reflections" by John Hill

On the half shell by Francesco Tonelli (my veggie stomach is clenched with disgust at the thought of eating all that slimy mollusc stuff, but I have to admit it's a brilliant photo)
Central Park in the Snow by Kate Westrop

Good voting system (sure, a little bit cumbersome, but very fair and balanced). I'm new here, so I hope I've done all of this correctly (I know that I'm just a visitor here, I hope no one will take my comments and criticisms amiss).

Competition Gallery

4pts - "Bubbles over pool" by John Hill (differential focus really makes it here)

3pts - "Irrigation Ditch" by Albert Yanowich Jr. (it almost looks like a frozen river! Movement and stillness...)

3pts - Unreality by Flick Merauld (I was there, I saw the scene, and love the resulting final photo)

1pt - "Blue Skies" by Paul Rohal (inspired me to shoot my own Competition photos!)

1pt - Kingsmead by Flick Merauld (great reflection, and the tiny splash of colour gives a nice focal point)

1pt - :: Misty Morning Pool :: by Tim Ashley (great use of colour and B&W, though the balance seems a bit off to me, heavy on the right, makes me feel a bit lopsided when looking at it :-)

1pt - Liquid Islands by Francesco Tonelli (such an interesting photo, the shapes of the water "puddles" are so interesting)

What, I've run out of voting points already? Ok, honourable Competition Gallery mentions go to:

"Cant stop the water" by John Hill (very clever implementation: I've seen shots like this before, but ensuring that a drop is coming out of the pipe-end of the spout really makes it for me)

"Bubble over pool" by John Hill (fascinating reflection, but I liked the other bubble shot better because of the interaction between the darker background plus the second OOF bubble)

Victoria Square Fountain by Paul Rohal (I've shot some fountains myself, but never such a beautifully lit one at night, really nice job)

Punts by Flick Merauld (am very taken with the zig-zag pattern in particular)

"Pebbles Under Water" by Bob Cody (I get a real sense of movement, and feel like I'm being pulled into the image...it's like I expect the stream to suddenly start flowing again as I gaze at it)

Puddle by Francesco Tonelli (I had to look twice to realise that this was an example of selective desaturation, nice job)

...... and not a drop to drink by jono slack (forgive me, it's not the photo that gets the honourable mention, but the evocative title!)

Splash by John Denton (I admit that the thumbnail of this image didn't catch my eye, but the full size shot looked like a fireworks display gone mad!)

Exhibition Gallery:

4pts - Blue, surveying the storm by Jono Slack (great composition, timing and colour! My only criticism: too bad the dog cuts through the line of surf)

3pts - "Dreaming" by John Hill (it all comes together here: shapes, colours, scene, person. Wish I'd been there...heck, wish I was there right now! :-)
2pts - Rockpool at Crackington Haven, by Quentin Bargate (draws my eye nicely)

1pt - Autumn Colour by Flick Merauld (a riot of muted colours. I can't help but wonder at the potential of the single leaf that isn't waterlogged, I just keep coming back to it)

1pt - Sketching on the Arno by Jono Slack (the large amount of "white space" really appeals to my designer's eye)

1pt - Reflections by Kate Westrop (soft and painterly, very restful. That fence coming down to the water is an arrowhead, or a beak, or...)

1pt - Splash by Claudio Gatti (it's not just the timing, but the shape of the water that caught my eye: how the lower part of the splash has been shaped by the tire treads. Well spotted)

1pt - "The Swim Team" by Albert Yanowich Jr. (clever clever clever! My own swim team photos--way in the past!-- weren't nearly as interesting)

Again, out of votes too soon...

Honourable Exhibition Gallery mentions go to:

Derelict West Pier, Brighton by Dave Millier (highlights a little too blown for me, but I really enjoy the scalloped edges of the incoming waves)

Seastacks, low tide by Dave Millier (the clouds converging on the stack to the left, very strong direction!)

"Swimmin'" by Albert Yanowich Jr. (good colours, good crop, slightly disturbing angle on the face, though I'm pretty sure that that's a smile :-)

Above Us Only Sky by Flick Merauld (well, the building seems more important than the "water", but I still think it's a very strong image)

Reflections by Flick Merauld (endless patterns, like I mention for Bob Cody's "Pebbles Under Water": this looks like it's going to suddenly move back into motion!)

Brugge Convent by Janna Burrough (a nice reflection, but I'm very drawn to the green and white of the area to the far right)

Florence by Janna Burrough (a great leading reflection, I bet that you don't get still waters like this often. Unfortunately, the lighting seems a bit flat to me)

"A Mauritian morning" by Quentin Bargate (lovely colours, and a good object to focus on in the distance. I can't help but wonder if the foreground could have been stronger, sorry!)

"Brownhill Creek" by Paul Rohal (infrared? It certainly has rendered the water very black, which shows up the swirls nicely)

The Sky and Sea, Pembrokeshire, by Quentin Bargate (really gives me a sense of how vast the sea and sky can be)

"I feel cool in my pool" by Roland Paschhoff (a really humorous image, hope you didn't get jumped on! Water is sort of secondary to this image, isn't it?)

Torrens River Bridge by Paul Rohal (fantastic reflection, taken at just the right time of night!)

Into-the-Mystic by Kate Westrop (really does evoke the abstract look of an oil painting)

Central Park in the Snow by Kate Westrop (very clever leaving in the subtle blue)

Special Awards:

The "You Need to Clean Your Camera...Oops, No You Don't" Award goes to:

Foz Do Iguacu by Rebecca Snell (great job on the rainbow! I really did think, before I read your note, that the birds were CCD specs, I thought it was the worst case I'd ever seen! :-)

The "Most Like My Neighborhood" Award goes to:

"Spring Tide" by Roland Paschhoff (we had torrential rain here in London yesterday, and I saw several cars floating after they had misestimated how deep some of the "puddles" were :-)

Hi,

I might be wrong but I think you've a couple of extra points in each gallery to award. I'm guessing you would like to given so many honourable mentions.

Lucky you, wish I had more points as I found it really hard to decide.

Regards

Paul

This was so hard, and I'm still not sure...but I don't think more deliberation will make it any easier. Some images grew on me with more viewing, and i think this speaks volumes for the difference between instant impact and greater depth.

4pts - Frog Heaven by Francesco Tonelli (I love the pattern quality of this. It isn't as slick as some of the other pictures, but the pattern and colours are beautiful, and the whole image has a delicacy and sensitivity that kept me coming back again and againl).

2pts - "Bubble over pool" by John Hill (initially i preferred the other bubble pic, but now i like this one better for the soft, abstract background and the composition)

2pts - "Mesa Creek" by Albert Yanowich Jr. (again more subtle than some other entries, but the softness and tranquility really appeal to me).

2pts - "Sleep Standing" by Paul Rohal (this is witty, striking and a great composition).

1pt - "Blue Skies" by Paul Rohal (another one that grew and grew on me, and a very clever idea. I love the blueness).

1pt - "Cant stop the water" by John Hill (another very witty image, beautifully executed. The texture and lighting are sublime).

1pt - "Bubbles over pool" by John Hill (gorgeous, but I feel the other has the edge).

1pt - the diving tree by jono slack (this is lovely and i would have voted it higher if the green had been a little less "in-yer-face")
1pt - Splash by John Denton (fantastic composition with tactile appeal).

1pt - "Spoon Splash 1" by Charles Gervais (hard for me to be impartial as i actually poured the water for this one and saw it on screen soon after. Great idea with lots of potential perhaps not yet fully realised, but it's a difficult thing to do. the colour and texture are delicious).
Honourable mention:

"Pink Drink" by Quentin Bargate (please tell us what it is! Love the colour on softness of this.)

Victoria Square Fountain by Paul Rohal (very competent and dynamic piece of work).

"Pebbles Under Water" by Bob Cody (yummy light, pattern and colour, like a liquid tiger stripe).

Misty Morning Pool :: by Tim Ashley (another one that's grown on me. The blue against the grey is very tranquil and i love the misty, early morning feel).

Liquid Islands by Francesco Tonelli (delicious texture and colour that you want to eat!).
...... and not a drop to drink by jono slack (gorgeous depth and colour).

"End of family day out" by Dave Millier (the light in this is beautiful, and i'm drawn by the faintly nostalgic aura of the image.

16 points, not 14! So, I have two more points to vote in each gallery (thanks Paul for noticing my error)

Competition
1pt - "Pebbles Under Water" by Bob Cody
1pt - Puddle by Francesco Tonelli

Exhibition
1pt - Torrens River Bridge by Paul Rohal
1pt - Central Park in the Snow by Kate Westrop

Apologies for the error,

Chas
Hi,

I might be wrong but I think you've a couple of extra points in
each gallery to award. I'm guessing you would like to given so
many honourable mentions.

Lucky you, wish I had more points as I found it really hard to decide.

Regards

Paul

"Pink Drink" by Quentin Bargate (please tell us what it is! Love
the colour on softness of this.)
Well, Flick, this shot was so tricky - based on days of careful experimentation with various pignments, test shots...blah blah

Oh, I give up, its Ribena :-) I used "longer" setting on camera, then tricked Ribena in to the water flow from outside the image area, then boosted the saturation slighly in Photoshop.

Specially since I was one of the recipients.

Hi There

It's great that there were more entries this time - and a pretty high standard at that.
It's so difficult to make choices, but here we go

Competition:
Bit of a whitewash by Flick here - I thought all her shots were lovely:

4pts - Kingsmead by Flick Merauld
not usually convinced by partially recolouring - but this really works

3pts - Misty Morning Pool by Tim Ashley
original and very characteristic of Tim - great

3pts - Punts by Flick Merauld
not a new subject, but nicly done, and the sepia works

2pts - Puddle by Francesco Tonelli
somehow more than it seems at first sight (another successful recolouring job)

2pts - Pink Drink by Quentin Bargate
sooo formal! I love it,

1pt - Can't stop the water by John Hill

Well, it made me smile - it's nicely realised and I liked it better than the bubble pics
(which, though well realised, seemed a little too contrived).

1pt - Unreality by Flick Merauld

Flick again - I think this is excellent, and would have given it more if it wasn't for
the other two!

Exhibition:

Lots of wonderful stuff here, choosing was very hard, but here's my (current) feelings

4pts - On the half shell by Francesco Tonelli
What Francesco does best - wonderful and mouth watering.

3pts - "A Mauritian morning" by Quentin Bargate
A lovely photo, he deserves more for carrying all that gear to Mauritias!

2pts - Rockpool at Crackington Haven by Quentin Bargate
I love this kind of shot, and he's done it so well.

2pts - Dreamy Sea" by John Hill
Nicely composed, and nicely executed

2pts - Splash by Claudio Gatti
just GREAT!

1pts - Derelict West Pier, Brighton by David Millier
David's caught the nostalgic mood really nicely here - great shot . . .
and more interesting as the pier has now (I believe) washed away.

1pts - Breakfast by David Fink
Hi David! I really like this one - I also liked the composition and idea of the
Virginia barn, but thought it let down by the quality of the scan.

I also think that Warren (our reluctant organiser) deserves a big vote of thanks - he's done it with a very good grace! It was also nice to see John Oliviera from Kodak entering into the Exhibition gallery - let's have more from the yellow guys!

I agree with Paul - for the next competition let's change the rules, so that the previous winner can join in, as well as organise.

I also think that it was a good idea to have a pretty general topic like 'water' - there are not enough entrants yet to make it a good idea to exclude anyone with anything too specific.

Kind Regards
