On behalf of the host, Nic Hanekom (AKA Nicholas J), I'd like to
thank the participants of Challenge 4, "Shadows", for a very
compelling set of images. Great work by all.

Voting starts now and closes at 11:59AM GMT on Tuesday (48 hours).
I will post the results an hour thereafter. Click here to see the
Close of Voting time for your locale...

And here are the galleries for Challenge 4, "Shadows"...

CALL FOR HELP : To ensure an accurate set of results, I'd like a
volunteer to count votes for comparison purposes. Carpenter's
Creed: Measure twice... Can I get a hand from someone? Given the
close of voting time, someone from North America (or a European
night owl) will work best.

VOTING GUIDELINES…
  • Vote within this thread only.
  • Anyone may vote. You do not need to have an entry in either
gallery to vote.
  • Key point: It's not too late to leave comments as you browse. :-)
  • Please vote in both Eligible and Exhibition galleries.
  • You may vote for a maximum of 5 photos in each gallery, and you
have 10 points to use per gallery. Maximum points allowed per
photo is 5.
  • You do not need to award all 10 points, but you will likely
dilute your vote if you award less.
  • You can specify as many Honorable Mentions as you like. If you
run out of votes before you run out of images you liked, please let
people know.
  • Feel free to include comments with your votes. Let folks know
what you liked about their images.
  • Please vote for photos other than your own.
  • Here is the format for voting…
ELIGIBLE Gallery: http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/eligible_4
pts: [ Image Title_] by [ Artist ] > > repeat up to 5 images/10
points

Honorable Mentions…
  • [ Image Title ] by [ Artist ] > > repeat as desired
EXHIBITION Gallery: http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/exhibition_4
pts: [ Image Title_] by [ Artist ] > > repeat up to 5 images/10
points

Honorable Mentions…

Again, thanks to the participants and to the folks who take time to
view the galleries and post their votes. Great Challenge, terrific
galleries. Here's to the next!

Hi Rob

Thanks for the HM. I agree with you on the composition but as you can imagine getting a kitten to do anyhting planned is a laugh in its self. I say that but if you have seen the thread on 100 cats, those are some great cat shots.
Eligible Gallery
3 Glass shadows by Mark J
Nice lighting of a "standard" shot through the curtains. This has
been done 11 billion times to the 17th power but not all handle the
lighting as well as this.
3 Sun Flower by Bernard Maltais
I actually like this better than the "thinking" one but it needs
some reflected light on the flowers. A bit too dark.
4 Thinking by Bernard Maltais
Done many times, but when the opportunity presents itself the shot
must be taken. It's asking to be done. Too bad a catchlight in the
eyes from a........whatever wasn't there.

Eligible Honorable mention
Disney Concert Hall by Jeff Aragaki
Bound by shadows by Mark J
For some reason I like the Glass shadows better even though I
believe in the keep it simple concept which this one follows more
closely.
Her True Colors by Mark Hensley
Ok, I like cats! ;) Different angle and a bit less clutter so the
eye wasn't drawn from the subject.
Light and Shadows by Vikas
Very, very nice studio shot. I'd give it a 5 for studio work but
feel it exceeds the control that the majority of other challengers
have in their possession and is therefore putting others at a
disadvantage. Falls in line with the idea that voters should
determine whether or not too much darkroom work was being used.

Exhibition Gallery
4 False Adobe
Excellent use of shadow (the subject of this ballgame) to be a
prime part of the composition. Causes me to ponder and also imagine
where this might be.
3 Whirlpool of Shadows by Mark J
Good job but makes me want to see the light setup to arrange this
shot differently. Perhaps different treatment of the shadows in
Photoshop?
3 Moon Shadow by Mark J
Not a lot to say. Is the blue from purposely altered white balance?
Either in camera or out.

Honorable Mention
Hayfield by Teapot
Man's Best Friend by Robert
Inner Sanctum by theblue
Sphix by Steve Huff

Hi Ann,

This was my first time in one of the challenges and it was a lot of fun. I have to say that it was also a great learning experience as I was blow away by how creative everyone was with the subject matter. I can't wait for the next one.
Such an interesting topic. Thanks Nicolas for doing this one and
thanks to Joe for running the voting. It was hard to pick just five
and to spread out just ten points with so many good ones. Here are
my votes in Eligible:
4 pts - Light and Shadows by Vikas
2 pts - Bound by Shadows by Mark J
2 pts - Her True Colors by Mark Heasley
1 pt - The Faraway Tree by David Chow
1 pt - Shadow of Time by Denise Wall

Hi Julio,

Thank you for the vote on this one. I hope at some point we have a challenge for which the image style of the refelction and shadow fits better. I think there might be some cool things that can be done with a little more experimentation.

Great variety and some very unique takes on "Shadows."
Congratulations to everyone for another great cop of shots.

Hi Bee,

Thanks for the HM. I agree but I wanst sure how best to capture the shadows of the roof line without getting too much of just sky in the image so I went for the tilted look. Maybe a shot without the tilt but more tightly cropped/zoomed on the shadow.

Mark Hensley
The images I thought best represented the theme.

Eligible
5 pts Shadow Dancing by Ed Hahn
3 pts The Blue Lamp by Frederic Poncelet
2 pts Pump House

Honorable mention
God is in the Details by Mark Hensley - A great subject, but the
tilted composition didn't work for me.

Hi Rob,

Thank you for your vote. I can't agree more regarding the number of great shots in both gallerys. I have purchased stock photos before for little ads for my business and I am amazed at how much better the work that was done here by the members of the forum than what I see in many stock photo sets.

2 pts Bound By Shadows by Mark J
1 pts God is in the Details by Mark Hensley

This movie was recently rereleased, believe it or not. I saw it this year and one or two years ago at the Paramount Theater. Evidently, much of it was lost, so the rerelease constitutes a major effort to gather various significant pieces of it. Since it was so recently rereleased, I suspect you can get it on DVD.
Many thanks Victor,

I have never seen the movie, but browsing thru those shots it looks
like I am missing a vital movie from my collection. I understand
that this film created a big stir when it was first released.

There is very much the same kind of feeling in those movie shots as
I tried to give Unreal. My son has a whole box full of action men
(about 30 of them i think), so I might try to see if I can get a
something from a whole host of them. It's funny I never thought
that a toy could pull off the kind of responce i have got for this
pic.:-)

cheers

rob
