I've noticed that I'm drawn to pictures with strong colors. I thought it was funny that Mike thought the kitten was too saturated in my entry because I really like deep, saturated colors. (The color did stand out next to the black and white, but I didn't alter the color at all. I just masked out the rest of the picture's color).

This is a very general subject so everyone can be creative and have fun. Still lifes of all one color or outdoor shots of contrasting color... Whatever you want as long as someone will look at it and say, "Wow, look at that color!" )

It's a great time of year to find color outdoors, but lets try NOT to have a gallery full of flowers. Also, don't just take a shot and change the colors in PS. Buy some lemons and limes, find a row of taxis, or there's always the standby sunset.

We'll get the gallery and guidelines up asap, but I thought you might want to know what the topic is now rather than later.

Assume the challenge starts on Friday, June 14. Paige and/or I will get the guidelines up and published ASAP, along with the new site. We may a day or so getting it up, but don't let that stop everybody from taking pictures.

Exhibition Gallery is for images taken with any camera at any time (ransack your existing galleries).

You may post a maximum of 3 photos in each gallery.

So that the gallery can be viewed by everyone, pictures should be resized BEFORE submittal. MAXIMUM file size is 150kb and 800x600 pixels (I usually make my longest side 650 and it seems to work just fine).

For each picture, Please include:

Picture Title
Camera Used
Description/Comments (optional)
Post Processing Details
Date of Picture (required for Eligible Gallery only)

• Pictures missing any of the required info will not be eligible.

Please do not send off-topic entries. If there may be a question as to whether or not your entry fits the topic, then please include an explanation with the picture. The moderator and uploaders have the final decision on whether or not to upload a picture for consideration.


We have a very liberal rule about post processing. Basically, anything goes. It will be up to the voters to decide how much is too much.

On this particular challenge, I suggested that you don't just take any old picture and alter the coloring in PS to make it fit the category. This does not mean that you can't tweak saturation or even use a layer to multiply. It does mean that you probably shouldn't take a picture of a zebra and paint it orange. The challenge is to PHOTOGRAPH color, and I believe that the voting will reflect that.

The guidelines are in place primarily for those with 56k modems. We can upload something larger, but it will require more time for others with slower connections to view it. However, unlike dpchallenge, we won't hold precisely to the 150k size - but keep it close. Last time we got a lot of submissions at > 2M in size. We really don't have time to resize pictures.

well, it's obvious that the photographer(s) took photo(s) somewhere near the camera's full capability, or they have a lot of color details in the images.

Hang on, doesn't pbase do the resize automatically? pity the challenge web site was tampered with and the general access removed so that individual photographers can no longer upload the file(s) themselves.

Could we find another way so that the uploaders don't need to receive an email containing a photo, but rather transfer a file from a holding pen onto pbase?

I have some minor concerns about limiting files to 800x600 and 150Kb, but I guess if we have general compliance, then it is a level playing field.

Next idea - the number of colors allowed could be limited to 256. (OK, getting a little bit silly now, I know)

Next idea - the number of colors allowed could be limited to 256.
(OK, getting a little bit silly now, I know)

I'm with you on this one. Perhaps it's my aging eyes, but I find anything less than 1280x1024 to be not worth the trouble. 800x600 is half the resolution at which I normally shoot, meaning half the information, half the life of the original image will be gone.

If this is a matter of the intermediate processors having slow modems, I'd be happy to volunteer for duty. I've got a fast cable modem connection and I'm not afraid to use it. If the problem is people viewing the pics, I thought that was what the various sizes were for.

Oops. Sorry 'bout that. Sort of like me looking for shadows to photograph on a cloudy, rainy day. )

The field is wide open though so you can just set up something in your house. Guess it depends on what you need practice with - studio shots or outdoor.

As far as the size thing goes. I'm one of the poor modem sufferers, and I do just use the small sizes to view the pics. The restriction is mainly to help the uploaders. I thought that particular pixel size was chosen because it's near the same size that pbase uses for "large". I, for one, never look at the original.

You should be able to resize the photo easily in photo shop, and saved as a jpeg. Then just send it to those of us who will post it. In the email, put the other info: name of artist, camera, date, title, comments, technical details. If you have any other specific questions, just send me an email and we will get them straightened out.

Yes, there are some really awesome shots there! I like this challenge - it's open for a broad range of dynamic interpretation. I am looking forward to Monday when everyone sends in their weekend work - I have a feeling we're gonna have some outstanding shots! It's gonna be hard to try and pick just three!

i do agree we shouldn't have full size straight from the camera sizes. it isn't needed and it just looks more blurry when viewed. but 150k is very small. photosig uses the 360k, which is also small but usuable. with the max size of 640,000 total horiz and vert edges multiplied.

i can see why modem people wouldn't like it, but 150k, you actually defeat the purpose of the challenge - because at that level, you actually reduce the color quality.
