CD burning problems

Hello all,

I recently upgraded my Macintosh G4 to OS-X (Panther). Ever since doing this, I haven't been able to burn any CDs. Previous to OS-X, I used Toast 5.0.1 and everything worked fine. But since upgrading, Toast no longer recognizes my external CD burner (a USB LaCie model from around 1999) ... it did before.

Part 2 ... So then I thought maybe the CD burning programming in iTunes would do the job. I have never used it before, although it seems pretty straightforward. I followed all of the instructions. Everything seemed to be going fine. My G4 was behaving exactly as if it was burning a CD. The only problem was that when the so-called burning was finished and I tried to play the CD, the CD is not recognized by any of my CD players. So I'm not sure what's going on.

Do I need to reload a driver or something? Is it possible that the CD burner's laser burned out somehow in the process of upgrading to OS-X (highly unlikely I would think)? I'm stumped!

Does anybody have any suggestions?

I already wrote to Toast about the problem and am waiting for a reply. I'm hoping that somebody here might be able to save me a lot of grief.

if it doesn't, more than likely the external burner is toasted.

I believe you need Toast 5.2.1 with Panther. You can get an upgrade on Roxio's website.

Thanks! I actually downloaded Toast 5.2.3 from the Roxio website today. But in the process of installing, it asks for my CD Key number. I have a serial number written down, but not a CD Key ... and I no longer have the original box or literature either. (sigh) So I haven't gotten past that point in the installation.

But even without being able to use Toast, it should still work with iTunes, shouldn't it? I remember trying to burn using iPhoto a few weeks back and that didn't work either. But I don't remember the reason why.

It is very possible that your external drive is not supported by OS X. Does it work if you boot into OS 9 (System Preferences -> System -> Startup Disk -> Mac OS 9, and reboot)? If the drive still works in OS 9 then try to contact LaCie about the driver for the burner.

I had misplaced my "key". I called Roxio, they gave me a temporary or generic number. Since then I found my number. Try that.

I think you're onto something!

When I try to use Toast for burning, it automatically goes into Classic mode. Is that the same as booting up with OS9? (I'm thinking not).

BUT that doesn't explain why I can't burn the CD using iTunes ... which could also be as you say ... the drive not being supported by OSX. Very good! I'll get right on it!

No, this is not the same. In Cassic mode burning still would be performed by the OS X underlying software. You need to select the Mac OS 9 startup folder as I described in my previous post and restart the computer. It will boot exactly as it used to before you installed OS X.

To switch back from OS 9 to OS X you will need to choose OS X in the Startup Disk in Control Panels, and restart again.

BUT that doesn't explain why I can't burn the CD using iTunes ...

iTunes or not, any application will send a stream of data to the same driver, that will pass it to the burner. If your driver does not work in OS X then no application will be able to write to the CD.

If the CD burner still works when you boot in OS 9 (not Classsic within OS X), then you will achieve 2 results:

1. You will have a temporary solution for your burning needs

2. You will know that your driver is woring, and you will be able to find the necessary software to use it with OS X, providing it exists.

I was having the same problem.

The following information was passed on to me...and it worked:

Starting with iTunes 4.5 Apple changed the copy protection for iTunes Music Store downloads so that Toast (and other third-party applications) cannot burn them with sound. You need to use iTunes to burn those tracks to audio CD.

Roxio has re-established the ability to burn Music Store tracks in the recently released Jam 6.0.2. Maybe they'll be able to get it back in a future update to Toast as well.

Let us know the response you get from Roxio.

You people are so smart!!! Thank you Mr. Tortellino! I'm pretty darn sure you found the problem. I changed start-up disks per your instructions. Upon restarting, I started the Toast program and sure enough, the CD burner was recognized. I don't have time to test it out any more tonight, but will try to get to it tomorrow. Now all I should have to worry about is if a driver exists for OS X. Even if it doesn't, it looks like a have a work-around. Thank you once again!

No, this is not the same. In Cassic mode burning still would be

You should also run the System Profiler, just to see what OS X thinks of your USB drive.

Thanks once again. I looked at the System Profiler and it DOES see the LaCie CD burner. (I'm about to attempt burning a CD running OS 9.2 as suggested by Mr. Ms.Tortellino in a previous post). I have my fingers crossed.

First, look at your faulty burned CD surface to see if any tracks were actually recorded on it. If it looks like nothing was written to it then let's wait for the results of recording in OS 9 and an answer from La Cie about the use of the drive with OS X.

If you see that something was written on it then read on.

Since it's an older USB burner it's probaly USB 1.1, which may have problems sending the data to the burner fast enough. Did you have to limit the burning speed in Mac OS 9?

In OS X in iTunes try to limit the burning speed by going to Preferences -> Burning, and select Preferred Speed 2x. Also make sure that you choose Audio CD in that panel. Now close it and try to burn a few tracks again.

Also, have you tried burning files from Finder in OS X?

The disc burning capabilities in itunes/iphoto, etc. is limited to internal cd burners and a limited number of external drives. I see your drive is older(circa 1999) and this would probably not be recognized by OSX. The Toast update would appear to be your best bet if you want to burn in OSX

I had Toast 5.1, which worked fine w/ 9 and sometimes okay w/ 10. The sometimes got worse & worse until last week in desperation I went to the Toast/Roxio site looking to see what if any conflicts there might be with 10.3.x. What's there indicates that there is no conflict - hah! tell that to my computers! I also found that the 5.x version had gone though a couple upgrades before 6 came out. Spending a little more than two hours on the phone lines downloading the upgrades proved to be worth it - Toast now works like it should. Curious thing is though, while 5.2.3 works good on the laptop G4/667, it will not on the G5/dual 1.8.

I don't know if anyone else has already suggested it, but it is definately worth downlading the (free) upgrades to see if that helps your problem. The first one upgrades 5.0.x to 5.2.1 and the other takes 5.2.1 to 5.2.3.

Man, my head is swimming! ;-) Okay ... 3 things to report here. #1, it does look like something was recorded on the CDs that the players aren't recognizing (that is, the CDs I tried to burn in OS X using iTunes). #2, I was able to burn good CDs using my old version of Toast (5.0.2 I believe). (Yay!) And #3, I did receive an email from LaCie which in part is as follows:

drive, based on a Philips CDD3610 mechanism. As far as I am able to
determine, the drive is MMC-3 compliant and should work in OS X.

If the drive is Apple supported, it will show up in the Apple System
Profiler as Disk Burning: Apple Supported. You would be able to use
Disk Burner and iTunes to burn disks.

My System Profiler looks just like LaCie says it would above.

If you see that something was written on it then read on.

Since it's an older USB burner it's probaly USB 1.1, which may have
problems sending the data to the burner fast enough. Did you have
to limit the burning speed in Mac OS 9?

No, I didn't have to do anything externally to limit the burning speed. The software handles that okay without me having to interact. (2X is my maximum speed ... which is very easy to calculate and monitor when you know the total running time).

In OS X in iTunes try to limit the burning speed by going to
Preferences -> Burning, and select Preferred Speed 2x. Also make
sure that you choose Audio CD in that panel. Now close it and try
to burn a few tracks again.

I'll give it a shot! It can't hurt. And up until now, I have always made sure the Audio CD box was checked. I also think that it was trying to burn at 2X all by itself, but I'll select 2X just in case.

Also, have you tried burning files from Finder in OS X?

No I haven't tried that one yet, but I'll give it a shot too!

(A tech support person at LaCie wrote to me telling me he/she thought it should work with iTunes). I'm still pursuing the Toast update too!
