Capture One: No image selected

On import, Capture One (16.3.3, Windows 10) seems not always to pick up all the files in a folder. It picks up most, but not all, the files that Explorer (or ACDSee) shows. In each case I can import the file immediately before and after the file in question.

I've tried:

• Copying the files into a different, temporary directory, but C! still does not see them
• Switching off all filters that I can find
• Exiting and restarting C1
• Checking the C1 help site
• Verifying the catalog

Any suggestions? I'd greatly appreciate any help!

What distinguishes the unseen files from the seen ones? Different file format, perhaps?

No discernible difference. Twelve year old .nef files from a D200, and C1 sees all except five in a folder of 75 images. Even with an entirely new catalog, it does not see these files.
