CAPTURE NX2 cannot open NRW from Coolpix P1000 (but CAN open from P340)

Apologies for cross-post.

I am returning to shooting RAW (formerly with D4s and NEFs) after a couple years hiatus and am also trying to bring myself up to speed with a newly-purchased Coolpix P1000. I also have a Coolpix P340 that I was formerly using on occasion to shoot raw (NRWs).

I realize that Nikon no longer supports Capture NX2 and that there is a free version (NX Studio) that has essentially replaced Capture NX2/View NX2. However, I am wondering if anyone can explain why I can still open NRW files in the newer NX Studio and the old View NX2 for both the Coolpix P340 and P1000 cameras (on both Windows 11 and Windows 7) and can open NRW files in Capture NX2 for the P340 but NOT the P1000? If they are all NRW files, what is the difference that is preventing Capture NX2 from opening the NRW files from the Coolpix P1000? Could be wrong, but I don't think it is an NRW codec issue, as I can open the NRW files from P1000 with Windows programs just to view.

My former workflow (with NEFs from D4s and also the NRWs from P340) was to quickly review in View NX2, open in Capture NX2 for initial RAW edits and then into PS CSE 6 for additional editing (as TIF).

I realize that NX Studio replaces the combined Capture NX2/View NX2 but am trying to stick with former workflow on Windows 7 (because that is where all of my older software is) until I catch-up on NRW post-processing with other software. Any recommended workflows (with same or other recommended software)? It seems that if I try to go to PS CSE 6 now that I will need to use Adobe DNG converter with files from P1000?

I still have all of the Nik Software (and others) plug-ins in PS, which is partly why I was hoping to continue to us PS as my final workflow but am willing to move on, especially if the workflow from RAW files can be simplified and there are vastly improved software programs.

Thanks, in advance!

Lisa,

Not all NRWs are the same. The P1000 was released 2018 Q3, so any software released prior to that date is unlikely to accept its NRW files.

It looks like Capture NX-D runs on Win7 Sp1 or newer, and I'd guess that it would handle P1000 images. Perhaps that will work for you

https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/imaging-software/capture-nx-d.html

Beyond that, perhaps it's time to recognize that Win7 has run its course, and much of the newer software simply won't install on it. There have been huge advances in software capabilities, particularly in noise reduction - and you'll want to have those in your toolkit for the P1000 raw files. A new computer will likely to have a much more capable graphics card than what you have on your Win7 box

My personal preference is FastRawViewer for culling, DXO PL6 for processing, and (if needed) Topaz sharpen to fix images which have movement or focus issues. DXO should work with your NIK plugins, but not necessarily with others.

Adobe's new noise reduction algorithms seem to be competitive with DXO's, and you certainly could move in that direction as well.

The good thing is that you don't need to make this decision before your trip, because you're saving as NRW.

Thanks, Sherman!

The fact that not all NRW files are the same seems to be my issue. I did not realize that NRW is not "standard."

The ONLY reason I still have the system with Windows 7 is because that is where I have a full suite of software and all my plug-ins within PS CSE6 (more than just the full suite of Nik software). I could previously work pretty seamlessly between View NX2/Capture NX2/PS when it came to NEFs or to the P340 NRWs. Now that I am running newer laptops with Windows 11, I don't have the ability to go back to download all of the older Nikon software for working on RAW files. Seems I am now limited to NX Studio and Adobe DNG converter (if I am still trying to open in PS).

The link you shared ends up going to download for NX Studio (as opposed to NX-D, which is also no longer available for download). I am running NX Studio on newer system but just don't prefer the editing menus within. Was hoping there would be a "quick fix" for the P1000 NRWs and compatibility. I may have to take some time to establish a new workflow with new programs. Or just become much more accomplished in shooting better to begin with, lol!!

I think you will find that to be the case with NEF files, as well. For example, Nikon software versions older than, say, a Z 7 will not open NEF files from those cameras.

The last version of Capture NX-D is available here:

https://www.filehorse.com/download-capture-nx-d/download/

I downloaded it to check, and it is the identical size as the file I downloaded directly from Nikon when it was still available on their site, and the digital signatures are OK.
I did not install it on a computer, though.

Regarding the plugins, most of them can simply be copied from one folder to another and "just work", at least with Photoshop
