I have reached a real impass, I usually make split second decisions on final versions of my pictures, and never look back, but the crop on this one has me really indecisive, so I will throw it out to my fellows STFers to help me decide.

Here's the full frame version

which I love, but I wanted to make it a little more abstract, and take away some of the lower left side clutter, so I came up with this version

now I am soooooo confused, and can't make up my mind.
Sooo, any opinions? Full frame or cropped?
Thanks
pablo

pablo,

I like the cropped version better. It catches my attention more than the uncropped version.

Well it was beginning to look like my first decision was getting support, and then my wife just walked by and said "full frame" ! I wonder if she carries more weight? Uh-oh, thats not what I mean!!

In the full frame the center of interest is the silver building alone. The letters form excellent "leading lines" toward the building. In the cropped version, the letter "K" is now in competition with the building. Also the building has lost it's base.

I'm also leaning towards the full frame for the same reason, after all thats how I saw it in the viewfinder! thanks!

Yes, I like your crop, but I am a slave to trying to retain the same aspect ratio, and can't bring myself to deal with a square photograph! I've discarded many an exposure for that reason. I don't know call me disfunctional!
Thanks

I would crop it like this... .

my 2 cents.

I like the full frame version much better - better balance and more interesting subjects to contrast against.

While the cropped image is more dramatic, the drama is not about the building but the letters.

pablo -

I know you said you don't like the square look. But if you cut out all of the extraneous stuff, and I mean on ALL sides, leaving you with the important and undistracting elements of structure and color, and THEN you put a nice frame around it, you have something that would be both esthetically pleasing as well as very usable.

This is a slight variation of the other poster's "square" effort:

Yes, I agree with the sentiment here. Don't care about the frame, but the shot cropped in this manner makes it very appealing to me. Otherwise, I like the original version the best.

It depends on the result you are looking for. The full frame is a competent, documentary photograph. Not without its charm. The cropped version loses som of its utilitarianism but gains an additional emotive aspect which makes it pleasing to the eye.

Both serve a function, depending on the use to which you plan to put the image.
