Has anyone heard of any new digital cameras coming out of the Canon Camp for the end of this year???

Thanks

I think that they probably leave such announcements to the last minute, or a lot of people would stop buying current models and just wait for the new ones.

Also, if they put too many features and enhancements into their mid-range model, it could cannibalize sales of their high-end offerings ... for example, many buyers might bypass the D30 model if the perception was that they could get nearly the same performance with the G1 ... it would seem that if they were to come out with a successor to the D30 which proved to be a significant improvement (e.g. a 6-megapixel model like the D1X) then conceivably they could then offer an improved mid-range model that would not attack the sales of their state-of-the-art offering.

Ahh... You mean does anyone want to risk their employee status with Canon? An excellent question by the competition perhaps?

There's a lot of 'hype' around Minolta's Dimage D7 - I would think Canon would leak some information - even if their next generation isn't available for 9 months. People moving from the 2 to 3mp line, to the 5mp Dimage, will be hard pressed to move back to the Canon line. (assuming the D7 performs as expected)

The rumour going on the Canon SLR forum is that there will be a camera introduced to compete with the D1X at around $8K -- and a camera priced well below the D30, maybe at around $1K and w/2.1MP, that would also accept EF lenses -- to be announced in August.

If this is true, the new camera would definitely crimp G1/Pro90 sales (but perhaps make it up from people dumping their 995's etc)

What are the sources of the rumors? There have been numerous rumors in these forums. mark

To crimp G1/Pro90 sales, the new $1k camera would have to be more than just a body (EF lenses aren't cheap) and I also think that 2.1mp would hold it back quite a bit. It wouldn't surprise me to see Canon releasing an 'affordable' digital SLR though, as this seems to be the way to go.

Will there be a new g1? I'm tired of my s110 and want to upgrade to something like g1 but if there's any news of a g2 or something like it please let me know =]

You're suggesting someone with a budget of $700 for a compact digicam is going to jump right to a $8,000 pro digital SLR? Don't think so.

Sorry, should have read the last part of your sentance. I suppose it's remotely possible, but still doubtful that someone might spring for this rumored $1k digital SLR rather than a G1 or Pro90, but it has 2 things going against it - 1) you still have to buy lenses for it. This takes such a purchase far beyond a digicam budget, and 2) it's only 2.1 mp. Granted, the quality will be better than a 2.1mp compact digicam, but it'll be hard to justify.

Expect the usual 3-> 4 Mp upgrade. This means a G2 with 4 Mp. A pro90 with 3.5 effective Mpixels. Nothing spectacular here.
We can expect four new SLR's in the next year.

First of all (in a few weeks) the new EOS D1v
with 9Mpix,1x lensmultiplier, 45AF points, 8fps at $6500

Then in 6 months a EOS D700 based on the eos 300. This should be a (budget) $2000 camera with 1.6x lensmultiplier, 7AF points, 1fps (saving on internal RAM) and 5Mp.

Then in 9 months a EOS D7 based on the eos 3. This should be a $4000 camera with 1.6x lensmultiplier, 45AF points, 5fps and 5Mp.

Finally in one year a EOS D70 based on the eos 30/7. This should be a $3000 camera with 1.6x lensmultiplier,7AF points,3fps and 5Mp.

This is a good question!

The S20, which is now discontinued could use a replacement ... I've seen it in another post as a rumour, but it seems that someone posting the info never, EVER responds to a post suggesting they give up the source of that info ... (sigh)

I'm in the market for a Minolta D7, but want a second camera that will likely be the S300 ... OR ... a 3MP variant on the the Elph should there be some reliable info to support such a camera coming into existence anytime in the near future ...

Kind regards,

Martin
When is the next digital elph coming out?

Except for those of us with expensive Canon lenses already (with film EOS cameras gathering dust) waiting for the affordable digital SLR. $1000 is just about right!

Of course, I'd be disappointed with 2.1MP, but I'm sure Canon doesn't want to hurt the D30 sales. However, I'd dump the G1 in a heartbeat, even if I went from 3.1-2.1MP if I gain true TTL and get to use my nice EOS lenses.

I certainly hope this rumor is true... it may keep me from selling my lenses and springing for the Minolta D7!

Don't you get it. A 2Mpix is not cheaper to produce than a 3Mpix camera if the CMOS chip has the same size.

So they can shrick the size and add an dedicated 14-35mm lens, but this is not likely (not compatible with the EOS design/philosophy)

The Minolta Dimage 7's 2.5sec autofocus time lag is a joke!!!
Even my grandmother can focus quicker by hand!!
My 28-70/70-200 2.8 focusses well within 1 second (more like 0.5 second)
and my 14mm focusses in 2 tenth of a second.

Not a question of if, it's a question of when. Undoubtedly there will be a successor to the G1. If you want to upgrade, just do it. There's ALWAYS going to be something just around the corner. Canon obviously isn't going to tell you when, that would hurt sales of current units.
