10" high seem to be exact fit.Given that a small 15" laptop (mbp15") is 9.73" deep, how do you intend to use a bag that is less than 10" high?

Attached?Try the Think Tank Change Up V2.0
It is absolutely versatile and I had no issues loading it with the Nikon D810, Nikon 28-300mm
Did it leave any space for a few tablets? Seems to be too small... But finally, side pockets!and a Nikon 14-24mm lens.
Hi, the 28-300mm lens was attached to the D810 and that fits into the middle compartment perfectly, the left compartment was for the 14-24mm and I left the right compartment (the bag has 3 compartments) for at least one prime and spare batteries. You get extra inserts to create additional compartments as well.Attached?Try the Think Tank Change Up V2.0

Definitely adding to my list.

Wow...I just said compartments 5 times in one paragraph. That is terrible.
There is another pouch in the back as well but once the bag has the lens and camera in it...it is really tight. If you have one lens and body attached, there's more breathing space and the tablet will fit (without the tablet cover)...it is really tight.
The zipped and padded side pocket for a tablet is:Thanks. What camera do you bring in it? Do you know if it is available in any brick and mortar stores?I have it. It's easy to turn around for access to all compartments. The strap is adjustable. It has a hidden, zipped, padded slot (not visible here as it sits next to body) where you can slide in a tablet, or phablet, or phone). When you turn it around to access compartments it very secure and you don't have to worry about contents falling out. It also has a pouch on bottom which keeps a rain breaker.TurnStyle 20 is pretty interesting, thanks for the tip.

Do you have any personal experience? How hard it is to get to the pocket without taking it off? Is the strap adjustable?
Amazon reviews also say it fits only 7-8" tablets. Not 10"? Not 2 or 3?

You can check out Vanguard Up rise 38 II. I have this bag. It is a very well built messenger bag that can fit 1 DSLR bodies and 3 lenses easily. It has a zipper on top for easy access and fold over flap as well and plenty of pockets.Thanks.Hi, the 28-300mm lens was attached to the D810 and that fits into the middle compartment perfectly, the left compartment was for the 14-24mm and I left the right compartment (the bag has 3 compartments) for at least one prime and spare batteries. If external dimensions are "a few inches greater than internal", that means a lot of space is wasted. As I said in the beginning, I do not want very thick padding.External dimensions are usually a few inches greater than internal dimensions.10" high seem to be exact fit.Given that a small 15" laptop (mbp15") is 9.73" deep, how do you intend to use a bag that is less than 10" high?

It is MBP. 14.3" x 9.8". If the bag fit it, it will fit a few tablets as an alternative too.How big is your 15" laptop that you want to take?If external dimensions are "a few inches greater than internal", that means a lot of space is wasted. Cool, so you need a bag with no padding. It is MBP. 14.3" x 9.8". Wow. Basically a self-made bag. Because nothing else was done tight, among thousands of models available on the market. This is what I did as well.
Bought a water-resistant messenger bag (in my case Vaude Little Gustav), photo insert that is flexible and not too thick (Matin m-6477). Took the bag to a local shoemaker to make the zipper on top.
