I've started looking again at cameras after several years and several thousands of pics with my Sony s75 (G series equivalent). Why are these things getting so damn small !! I mean the new 800IS is so freaking puny how do you get used to this this. Anything smaller than the 710is seems like over kill to me. Is this what people truly want in a non dslr camera?? the picture quality and features and DURABILITY surely must suffer in some way doesn't it??

Add a wider angle to the 710s and it would probably be the perfect camera for me.

Small seems to be what the average consumer wants. Many people on these forums don't really fall into the "average" category and would like a reasonable size camera that performs well.

Most consumers base their needs on things like; "can I throw it in a backpack", can I put it in my pocket?, what color is it?, is it cool?, what kind of carrying case should I get?".

The average consumer doesn't care about picture quality and can't tell the difference between a good and bad picture. As long as the camera will allow them to take snapshots that will produce an image the camera is good for them.

Companies that make cameras know this and make 98% of their cameras for the average consumer. That's just good business.

For those people who are truly interested in something better the search goes on for the cameras that fall into that 2% category.
There aren't many.

well if you want something good and big.. why not try S3IS or G7.. that's surely big enough.. or mid size A630/A640??

I just bought the A710 this week and one of the reasons was it's size - small enough to be a "take anywhere" camera but also large enough to feel stable in one hand. The ultra compacts were, for me, just too small and whilst that is a benefit to many I personally found the ergonomics difficult

All in all I found it an excellent value for money package.

I'm interested the the G7 and the 710is so far with the 710s in front due to the very similiar feature set, lower price and smaller yet still comfortable size. I don't need a 12x zoom so no need to pay for that. Seems to be a lot of G7 bashing before the camera even comes out !! Go figure, maybe I'm more patient than some. Still waiting for DP's G7 review. Sony seems to have this pro-sumer grade camera behind, too bad for them they won't get any money from me this time unless they announce soon.
