You must be kidding right? As I am sure its explained in the manual, it means the you're indoors or there isn't enough light to prevent your camera from shaking and producing blurry pictures.

When you have the flash on, obviously the flash will provide more light... you need to re-read your manual and just practice with your camera.

unfortunately, i was a serious. i couldn't find anything in the manual regarding this symbol. you're explaination makes sense now that i think about it. didn't mean to ask a stupid question, but i just couldn't figure it out. thanks.

Whenever the camera doesn't see enough light that icon will come on. If you have the flash off, about 90% of the time it will be on, unless it's very bright, such as noon on a sunny day. It doesn't matter if you are in manual or auto mode either.

I overlooked the explanation for that symbol after reading my manual thoroughly. Eventually, but not immediately, I surmised what it was before finding the explanation later in the manual.

By the way, don't be afraid to shoot with the camera shake symbol on. Sometimes the blur will be slight and better than no photo at all or the harsh light of the flash. Also check out the thread that's posted on holding a camera steady while shooting.

Greg, stop misleading people, s230 camera manual is not a bible, you do not have to memorize it by heart! ;)
