I burn images taken with the 990 to cd and I've noticed in the local SuperDuperMart that there are cds for audio and some for data. What's the difference. Can you put photos on an audio cd?

Jarrell, The ones they call Music CD's cdr's are not rewritable. I have put files on them too and am sure pictures would probably go on but you couldn't erase them. The CDRW is more expensive and re-writable. I think music or files can go on either one although they mix you up at the store when they try to explain it to you. I may be completely wrong but this is all I know.. Jerry

. Can you put photos on an audio cd?

Yes, you can, but audio CD's are more expensive & are only required for stand alone CDR machines.

got'cha, thanks.

Jarrell, I burn all my photos onto CDs for storage. You can mix audio and data (pics) but depends on the burning software you are using. Nero Burning Software allows audio/data mix
http://www.ahead.de/download.htm

Adaptec Easy CD Creator also allows dual mix.

As far as I know, it doesn't matter the CD, it matters the software. Most software that burns a just audio CD "closes" the burn session afterwards so you can't add anything more. I burn audio and data onto Maxell CDR with excellent results.

Just a word of caution: I DID experience a CD "bacteria" that I read about regarding the breakdown of some CD's after a while. Only happened on one of about 500 CD's. Foil where data is burned separated in spots from plastic disc and was un-readable hence I always burn a duplicate of my photo CD's and keep them stored elsewhere.
If you have any more questions, feel free to email me [email protected]
Cheers, Sandi

Here in Canada the difference is the taxes. Audio CDR's are taxed higher and the extra revenue goes to the organization that pays royalties to recording artists. Kinda like trying to make us pay for napster etc.

Jarrel,

"Audio" CD-R and "Regular" CD-R are the same media.

"Audio" CD-Rs are intended for stand-alone audio CD recorders, which cannot use data CD-R. These disks have a mark that identifies them as "Audio" and pay an extra tax for music copyright.

Don't use audio CD-Rs in your computer unless you want to pay an extra price for the disks.

Greetings

Fernando

CDRs that have dyes in them suitable for the larger range of audio only CD players is probably the only big distinction. The marketing department pushes these at a premium but they cost the same to make. You can use either for simple burned CDs for data.

Think of the Audio versions as expensive emergency fodder.

I have a question along these lines. My Sony DVD player 885 will not play Data CDR discs I put music files on. If I were to do this with audio CDR's would they play on my Sony?
Thanks

Audio CDR should be encoded that a fee has been paid to the whatever organizations that setup this deal, and therefore you can play them in the consumer equipment such as yours.
