Built-in flash to be removed on rumored D800?

I am glad the D700 has a PUF, and I use it however, I have discovered I need a dedicated flash, so I'm glad it can also operate in commander mode.

Onboard flash is a very important feature and it always comes in handy when we needed it.
I love having an onboard flash for those times when I need some fill and don't happen to be packing a big flash.

It's fast and does a great job if you know it's limitations.

I shot two entire weddings with just a pop-up flash!! And my clients absolutely loved my work.

THANKS! :p

Couldn't agree more. Here is a shot with Popup Flash.

But the SB-900 bounced from a wall/ceiling is much better:

glenOX,

Yep, I get that too.
Particularly when I have a LOT of RadioPopper gear , both PX and JrX studio.

But, when I show them I can CONTROL the flashes remote via CLS , things go quiet. :)

Sometimes you "just" don't want to bother carrying or plugging in Radio triggers (the PX set up is a pain).
  • Sometimes I will just use the Pop up and the sb900's CLS ... or I will bounce it to trigger the sb900.
Even when I am full on Radio triggers ... TTL PX radiopoppers in combo with the JrX manual triggers ... I still use the PopUp flash to trigger.

It also makes my body easier to manage ... that sb900 is heavy after a while. add a grip, and ...........

HG
Some of my friends were laughing about my pop up flash. They said it looks like amateur-ish to have a pop flash. So i showed them what the pop flash can do in one of my engagement sessions

Flashes were triggered by RadioPopper attached to SG-IR http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/410445-REG/Nikon_4905_SG_3IR_IR_Panel_for.html/ so that i can trigger my 2 SB900s even they are not in line of sight. I still didnt impress them but when i say that i can adjust individual flash output in camera and without physically going to the flash. They were like...ohhh thats neat LOL

I hear you,Ross. Its time consuming and you have to assemble so many parts. What ive been doing lately is i gaffer tape the RadioPopper receiver to each flash and i velcro the transmitter to SG-3IR http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/410445-REG/Nikon_4905_SG_3IR_IR_Panel_for.html/ and jam it to the hot shoe so that i can use my Pop Up flash to trigger. Its really light set up and it works well for me :)

I'd definitely say keep the flash on the D800!

It's one of the reasons I chose the D700 over 5DMK2. It's cool for wireless flash but even better for fill light when there is no time to put on a proper flash.

However I am no pro - and if I was shooting long sessions all the time in a controlled enviroment - it would probably just get in the way. But for someone like me it's absolutely gold.

If true the removal of the PUF will create a large hole inside the body due to the removal of the not insignificantly sized capacitor. This space could be used for example to include two processors, similar to that which Canon has been trying recently
Two processors don't take any more space than one - it's an extra chip on the main board, which is not very densely packed as it is.
Nikon D3s main board (see the processor labelled 'EXPEED')

Canon 1DIV main board (see the processors labelled 'DIGIC 4')

Canon has used dual processors on its top line models since the MkIII's for one reason, a single processor wasn't fast enough to manage the frame rate. Nikon managed to match the throughput of the 2 DIGICs with a single chip, adding two will not give an advantage, since the frame rate limit is the mechanical systems in the camera.

Built in flash has an incredible value for several reasons.
Commander mode is way better than D3(I had D3 before my D700)

The built-in flash is there for "in case". Used in the right way a built in flash can produce excellent results, macro and close-up photography is one of the applications, snapshooting another one...

I don't believe a D700 successor will come without built-in flash, if so it could be the reason I won't buy one or iso 25600 should be very, very clean, which is posiible of course if Nikon made further progress after the D3s sensor development...

We'll see, soon... ;)

I prefer one really good picture in a day over 10 bad ones in a second...

The built in flash is one of the few things I like about the D700. I love it on the D300s ideal for keeping weight down and as a controller. The thing I hate most about the D700 (To the point it hardly gets used for this one thing alone) is the 90% viewfinder. If it turns out it's one or the other then I can definitely manage without the built in flash.

While I'm not a fan of pop-up flashes, I really like a built-in CLS commander. If this could be done with an IR LED, great. The only time I use a flash on the camera is for bounce or CLS.

With my D3, if I want to use an off-camera flash I need TWO flash units. I don't see much point in getting an SU-400 or SU-600 or whatever. Two flash units give me more flexibility for about the same price. A radiopopper would be nice.

The rumor I heard is that Nikon will go full steam into the 3D direction. The D800 will have two sensors, two lenses and two flash units for 3D imaging.
That should scare Canon a lot.
Your being silly Walter.

Have a Nikon day. : )

Pop-Up Flash can be an extremely useful tool in the "correct" situation. Actually use the Pop-Up on my 300s more than my SB-600 & SB-800. : )
