Hi guys:

I just spent about a 1/2 day building a new website for my pics.......

Nothing special (maybe a bit amateur??) --- give me your thoughts on the site and any comments on my pics......

http://www.murphymurphy.com

Thanks,

Dave

I am not saying that I am an expert, but I would consider using JAlbum. It's free and the skins can be edited and changed to meet your needs. I have been doing websites for a few years now and have never found anything that works like JAlbum. For some reason I can't stop putting pictures up on my sight....I know I have too many. After spending about a half a day changing a skin to what I wanted it works great. I just ad more pics to it and it generates everything you see on my photos sight, including copyright watermark, the "right-click" protection, header & background. Takes about 10 minutes to ad another 50 pics automatically.

Enjoy!

thanks for the software tip.

What Skin did you use and how did you incorporate the seascape as the background image?

I have looked at many of the shots that you have posted here and many are GREAT. So, coming from you, I am flattered that you like the "old car". Funny what you find hiking through a National Wildlife Refuge. It must have been brought in years ago when the place was logged. Then, the trees grew-up around it. You can't see from the shot, but there are some monster trees around it.......

On your main page the "Welcome" graphic has an unappealling tattered white edge typical of a GIF image saved with a transparent background and displayed on a non-white page. One way to fix that problem and smooth the image edges is to save the graphic in Photoshop at the time you create it using the "matte" option and making the matte color close to the same color as your web page background.

I agree. you will work out bugs as you go along. Nice simple clean site is refreshing.

Great eye inthe pics.

Is Register.com hosting your site? It appears so with the banner ad running at the bottom. i have been considering register.com's hosting service as well. Do you have to have the ad at the bottom do you know?

thanks

I agree that the welcome image needs some attention. If you can't correct it, you could probably drop it altogether.

The thing that I found distracting was the images that exceeded the right rail. In addition, I suggest trying to center your images between the left and right rail, instead of hugging the left. Within a td, simply add an align=center. This would also allow you to reduce the use of transparent spacer gif images. You can also do layout using stylesheets, but that's a more-detailed topic for another time.

I suggest adding a teaser on your photo pages, to get people to think about buying.

I think you can also improve the marketability of your product by detailing more about the artistic process, and the quality of the printing. Tell more about the photographer. But I digress into marketing.

You should note whether the copyright notice appears on the purchased image.

I suggest you state the price of your flotsam prints. Moreover, I suggest you not discount them. But I digress.

I find "Other Animals" unappealing. It's like the leftovers, that didn't warrant a category. What about "Animals"?

In your B&W section, I suggest noting the other categories that also contain them.

Thanks for sharing.

Most of the skins don't incorporate a background image...so I did. It takes a little trial and error, but in the end it worked great.

LOL!

My Domain is registered at Register.com but, I am actually using "free" webspace over at my ISP (earthlink). You get 10mb per email account "free" (up to 8 accounts == 80meg free) with DSL service.

I forwarded the domain name murphymurphy from register.com to the earthlink webspace. This is a "free" service but, you get the advertising banner. If you want to spend $50/year, you can forward the link without getting the banner.

These are all great tips..... I fully agree with most of them. The "site builder" software that I am using is not the most flexible..... I will likely need to switch to incorporate a few of your ideas.....

Thanks,

Dave

That shot was taken at Amelia Island Florida. Believe it or not, there was about 8 of them on the beach, as I approached, all 8 "headed for the trees" behind the dune. I followed, and took a few wide angle and zoomed shots..... I like this one the best.

Thanks for looking,

is wondeful!!! You were blessed to run into the set-up

Steve....

I will be adding an "about us" in the next couple of days.

But, all shots are from USA.
I quite like this site, the only things I'd change are the black on
black text at the top and the fact that it's not obvious where in
the world you are based. Somewhere in the U.S. I presume?

Other than that, great stuff, keep tinkerering it can onkly get
better!

If you are not using a pro web design suite (Macromedia or Adobe) then you really did a good job! Here are a few things I would like to mention - some from a professional standpoint and some from just my particular likes/dislikes.

1. This may be a limitation of yout hosting contract, but I find the ad frame distracting. Although I like frames myself - they are going the way of the dodo bird.

2. Where's your logo?? I think making a logo, even if its just a simple jpeg that you had afixed in a certain location (upper right or left in a cell in a table or something) may be a better eye catcher than the HTML text logo you have.

3. Use images for you links instead of HTML text. If a user has their font size different than you designed to, it will throw off your formatting. This is a whole lot easier than learning to use CSS style sheets (which gives you ultimate format control and flexibility) and aint too hard either.

4. You are selling prints on a website but don't have an automated way for people to purchase prints. Look into setting up a paypal account and start making some money - RIGHT NOW!!! I have used paypal for a while and I can tell you nothing is greater than coming home from a long days work and checking my e-mail to see I made a couple hundred dollars!! Just put an "add to cart" button next to each photo and off you go. They even have downloadable spreadsheet files of all your transactions for tax purposes too.

Also, some on-line photofinishers have a system where you link to their site with your photos and they give you a percentage after sale each month. They handle all of your shipping and handling too, but the price they want is a little steep if you ask me. I think shutterfly and dotphoto offer this service, and may be just what you want if you just want to get some income with no additional work.

5. Color scheme - what can I say, I love blue!!!

Good luck on the site, hope you sell enough pics to buy more gear!!!
