Best Practices to Avoid GX8/100-400 Shutter Shock

go check out the Camera Project's video from when Panasonic released the V2.0 firmware. they explain the new Auto shutter mode added and how it woks:
It doesn't engage reliably with all lenses tho, we've had reports here that it basically doesn't opt for e-shutter at all with the 100-400... Helen has commented how, at least based on the display, it also behaves erratically with the small 35-100.

i'm wondering (but never tested) if there's situations where i should only use lens IS with my 100-400 and turn off the body IS in the gx8.
Does Panasonic even allow that? I thought it was all or nothing...
That seems to be the case on the GX8
I'd think (tho this is totally speculative) that if anything it would be more helpful to do the opposite (turn OIS off, leave IBIS on), unfortunately that's not an option on Panasonic bodies AFAIK.
I think you are correct: not on the GX8,anyway. If I turn off the OIS switch on the lens with either the 12-35mm or 100-400mm lenses, the "Stabilizer OFF" icon appears on the screen, and there is no menu option for anything else.

As far as I know, the only situation for Body only stabilization is with non-OIS lenses, such as the 20mm and 7-14mm lenses. In those cases, there is a menu option to turn of the Body stabilization.

I rather think, the second picture shows a part of the natural wing movement of hummingbords when hovering: the e shutter only produces distorsions when the object moves sideways.

I did not experience shutter shock with GX8 and 10-400mm combo yet.

Looking through many photos with different shutter speeds and zoom ranges.

My quick CRO test was posted here:

It does not mean that SS does not happen at all with this camera and lens; but it is not as common or prominent as with some other combinations.

On the other hand, my wife's E-M10 and Olympus 75-300mm have HUGE shutter shock, making the lens nearly useless on this camera.

Well, 'erratic' might be the wrong word if, say, Panasonic have tuned Auto Shutter to behave differently with each Panasonic lens, in an appropriate manner--- possibly taking other settings into account too. If that were so, and I am only suggesting it, then 'erratic' could be replaced with 'smart'.

Impulses,

Thanks for responding to my question. Your link is to the long topic that inspired me to start this one. That topic makes it clear the 100-400 can contribute to shutter shock but most of the posters in that topic are using Olympus bodies. And, the topic is about testing procedures more than practical shooting. Hence, I thought it might be useful to determine practical working habits to minimize, reduce or even eliminate shutter shock effects when using the GX8 with the 100-400.

I am not questioning the existence of shutter shock. I'm trying to determine some best practices.

I started this topic. Thanks to all for the help.

At the minimum, several solutions were posted for when I feel like shutter shock is a threat. The reality for me is that, in the continual quest for the perfect "wall hangers", there will be a lot of rejects anyway. Posts suggest, and insist, that shutter shock won't ruin them all.

FWIW, it seems sad that an great camera and lens can get beat up for a manageable inconsistency!

Again, thanks for all that offered suggestions! I'll use what you gave me when or if I'm getting bad images.
