I usually get 150 "keeper" shots per football game in Large Fine and then convert to TIFF before editing. What is the most efficient method for batch conversions of these TIFF files (10-12 megs usually) to small JPEG files suitable for the web? And is there a way to maintain all the same file names (except the new extension) as on the tIFFs?

First of all (and really the only reason that I'm posting), if you are doing only batch conversions / processing with the files, why are you converting your jpegs to tiffs at all? If you need them as tiff later they can be converted. The only reason I'd store the files as a tif is if I did post processing individual to that image.

However, since I did actually make a post, I'll respond to the actual question too ;-)

I find that I like using command line utilities for doing bulk processing of images using things like imagemagick or image alchemy depending on OS.

In one word - IrfanView!
resize, resample, rename, you name it, it does it. Best of all, it's free!

Jim - sorry I wasn't clear - after I do the conversions to TIFF, I then do individual editing of each shot and resave as TIFF.

I'll look into imagemajik and image alchemy, as well as irfanview as Chris suggested. Thx guys.

Thumbs Plus does this.

Use the "Batch Process" command and you can do a whole bunch of things to many files. Re-size, crop, enchance etc.

In addition to all above mentioned applications, if you use Photoshop to edit your images, you can record an action and run it in batch for all files in a directory within Photoshop.

You could also create an action that saved the edited TIFF and then converted to 8-bit (if necessary) and save the JPEG in whatever quality you want. All with the press of a function key.

Why convert to tif in the first place? Just edit, and save as tif.

Thanks everyone - I've now got plenty (probably too much) to think about and try. With the suggestions so far, I'm sure my ideal workflow will ebcome clear soon.
