I have one of these gadgets

Using standard Android "Files" I can copy SD Card -> Phone then Phone -> USB. But if I try to copy SD Card -> USB, which is what I want to do, I get "Cannot find target path" error.

I can copy USB -> USB, USB -> SD Card, USB -> Phone, SD card -> Phone, Phone -> both SD card and USB but not SD -> USB. Doesn't make sense. I haven't tried the Micro SD card slot because I don't have any cards.

Anyone any ideas?

TIA, Bob

... that your USB connection is NOT set for file transfer. For Android (generically listed):

Settings - Connections - USB - [switch from "charging" (etc) to "file/image transfer"]

Your phone may have different wording, but mine says "File Transfer".

Good luck.

With my Leica X Vario I used a Flash Air memory card to wireless transfer images to my phone.

I use the app Solid Explorer with an anker USB hub. I can transfer directly from an attached card reader (or the SD reader in the Anker hub) directly to a flash drive also attached to the hub.

I have essentially the same setup except, rather than copy to a SD card, I copy to a 1Tb Lexar NVMe drive. I can copy from the card straight to the drive without saving on the phone.

I can also connect a power bank to power the drive and charge the phone at the same time.

The phone allows me to see what files I want to transfer, control the transfer and review files on the drive.

A lot more compact than a small laptop.
