B&H updated from Backorder to Processing

Ordered at 3:30 as well and just cancelled after finding one locally. Will be leaving on a trip next week and didn't want to push my luck given the current backorder status. They'lll probably be shipping again same next week though... if it weren't for the trip and my luck of it being on the UPS truck while I'm on my way to the airport, I would have stuck with BH.

excuse me, but can anyone please explain why people are waiting for these shipments? I was under the impression that B&H never did backorders, ie, that to actually buy one, it had to be "in stock" at the time. I always thought this made them the safest choice. Has B&H changed its policies?

I was being curious so I called B&H (Nov17 at 3pm est.) and they said that back in the end of Nov and on Dec 10 (I think he said 10) they temporarily allowed backorders. So, I then asked if the next shipment would be able to fill those back orders and then still allow "normal" purchasing...and he said that he didn't think the shipment would take care of the two sets of backorders... Guess we'll be waiting a while. All the better for Canon to figure out the "black spot" thing.

My understanding is close to yours, except: I understand that B&H doesn't take orders on a new model until they have notification from the manufacturer of what to expect (not when they have them in hand).

In this case, I think Canon threw them a curve ball. They took orders for bodies starting Nov. 30th, but would not take orders for the kits. A day or two later, people found that they could order kits for immediate delivery but almost no bodies went out. My guess is that Canon shipped kits instead of bodies and B&H has been playing catch-up on bodies ever since.

At the time I placed the order, I expected a one to two week wait to get mine and it's been 2 1/2 weeks since my order. I did, however, notice that my order status had changed from backorder to processing this morning.

This is the third new-model body that I've ordered from B&H. The first two took a week or two to ship. This body won't be too far off of their past performance.
Best Wishes,
Ken

I'm sorry...I should have stated that it was for the body only that I was talking about. This is one of those things that makes you go... Hmmmm! :)

simply walk down the street and pluck one off the shelf at Best Buy or order directly from a number of sources and have it in 3 days. What am I missing about the backorder game?

I don't know where you live, but here in SFbay area not a single one of the 20 odd BestBuy's in central California have a 5DM2 sitting on the shelf. I think it may depend on the region, state or city you live in. All I know is that here the only shelf they can be plucked from is the pre-order shelf.

There are no 5d mkII's available through any of the Bay Area Best Buys. Went to a store today and the clerk showed me their tracking system, which showed no stock on shelves in the SF Bay Area, no stock on incoming trucks, and no upcoming "allocations" from Canon.
