.ARW thumbnails in Mac OSX...?

On an older Mac (G5 PowerPC processor) with OSX I could have a flawless overview in thumbnails of my KM and Sony ARW-files.

Recently I upgraded to a newer Mac (Intel G5) with everything 'greater, bigger and better' ;-).

Except for... the ARW thumbnails. Sometimes they do show up like the real thing (a small picture) but other times they don't, and I just get the generic RAW symbol/icon.
Somehow I can't see the rule or system here.

Could some SONY+Mac user please shed some light on this matter?
I'm sure there must be a simple solution I'm overlooking.

Thanks for your response

Bart

Please people - really no one who can tell me how I can make the Sony RAW thumbnails consistently visible on a MacPro?
I can't believe I would be the only one having this nasty little problem...

With my Mac all things are ok.

I think you are not aware, that you have to activate the "symbol preview" in the setup dialogue how folders are shown (press cmd + J). There you activate that option. But be aware, that this huge load of thumnails slow down you system.

Have a look at my (German) dialogue.

Hope, I could help you. Best wishes!

Johannes

Dear responders, thank you all for your answers.

All of them were meant helpful, but none of them led to a consistent resolution.

I activated all applicable options, tried all connections of the ARWs with 'desired applications', updated to my heart's (and my Mac's) content, deleted preference files, restarted, logged out, rebooted, saw changes occur and disappear right before my eyes, and through it all I found similar complaints at several photography- and/or Mac- support forums.
Certain subroutines just seem to keep on conflicting, at each iteration.

Beware: Mac OSX Lion has a stubborn bug here concerning Sony's ARW files .

(Apart from that, everything works just fine with my Mac and I feel no urge whatsoever to return to a Windows PC ;-) )
Thank you all anyway!

Bart

It's a mess, unpredictable in its occurrence.

I think finder does only extract the jpg preview out of the ARWs. Does your camera support the option, not to embedd jpgs into the ARW?

make "list view" of that folder. Watch how finder does render the thumnails.

it's so weird. when i first got the Nex-7, ARWs wouldn't show on my WacBook. after some update, they then worked - thumbnails/previews and all. i backed up my images to my Ext HDD to do a much needed reformat of the whole thing and went through the updates. imported my images back to work on. and now ARWs don't show thumbnails/previews. i like to quickly go over the ARWs to right away delete images i don't want before importing to lightroom.

I just did a fresh install of OS X 10.8 ( I dislike upgrades...) and I have the same issue...no thumbnails at all with ARW files. I can see thumbnails of CR2 files from my Canon S95 as well as NEF files from my Nikon, so this is clearly an issue with Sony raw files.

Have just been having a play around with this myself. It seems that the issue is possibly with the compresses ARW format, which I think is the only option on the newer cameras.

My RAW files from the A700 display a preview on the desktop, whereas my cRAW files do not.

Sorry to dig this back up, but was there ever an easy solution to this.

I just find it easy to manage files with preview where i can quickly see the thumbnail and then distribute. But seems that ARW files are not being displayed. I have 10.7.5. How do you guys manage?

I wish I could help with your issue -- sounds like a strange bug.

I assume you can view the ARW files in Preview? (If not, it could mean you either don't have or there's a problem with the latest RAW OS update.)

The only other thing I can think of is to upgrade to 10.8. I know it seems like a silly reason, but personally 10.7 drove me batty (I still use 10.6 on my desktop), and I upgraded my laptop to 10.8 and it is far superior IMO. And it's only $19.99, so not a ridiculously expensive solution. (I also don't know for sure if that will solve the problem, but to me it's worth the $20 to upgrade anyway and we can keep our fingers crossed!)

To OP and the last repliers: This is not a bug, but a "feature". RAw processing is part of the OS in Apple's universe. If the OS X you run has the latest Apple RAW support installed, it should display the ARWs in finder and in preview, as both applications (and iPhoto and Aperture) rely on the OS RAW processor.

The latest RAW support update was this here .

The list of currently supported cameras in Mountain Lion (10.8.3) is here . Are your cameras covered?

Please note that Apple has limited their latest RAW updates to their latest OS, 10.8.x. If you still run an Apple computer on 10.7 or earlier, the latest RAW updates won't run on your Mac. Hence, if you stay with an OS older than 10.8.X or your camera is not yet supported, your finder and preview act as described in the OP.

Cheers,

Ralf

Hello, I have to disagree on this.

The OP is referring to a long-known OS X bug: ARW preview thumbnails are NOT shown in Finder, although Preview/iPhoto can actually open the single ARW file.

I've been experiencing the same bug since a couple of years. Infact, I use Preview (in the Contact Sheets view) in order to quickly review all the pics within a folder.

See this example from my Mac: a Finder window in the foreground (ARW previews are not shown), Preview in the background (the same images are being shown correctly): http://www.agostinomaiello.com/stuff/arw.jpg

Not true as well: I have OS X 10.7 (not 10.8) and the A99/NEX-6 RAW files are totally supported. Last week I even applied the latest RAW Compatibility update, that Apple released for some Fuji cameras (X20, X100S, X-E1, X-Pro1).

It's OS X 10.6 that is not supported anymore, but 10.7 is fine.

So was there a trick to get them to show? Or is it just in teh background or randomly.

Considering going to 10.8 just for this.

RAW shots from my three Alphas (a700, a900, a55) all show in Finder for me in 10.6 and 10.8, so I cannot comment further on this "bug".

Thanks a lot for that correction, as i skipped 10.7 i was not aware of that and assumed wrong.

The bug affects 10.7 only, and it is not related to the actual RAW support of the OS: as I wrote, the RAW images are actually supported (the user can open them in Preview and other apps), it's just the Finder preview that isn't working.

See: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3213982?start=0&tstart=0 :-(

Sony A99.

Same happens with NEX-6 files, and even with my old Sony's A100 ARW files (I just checked; again, I can open the files in Preview. It's just the preview that's missing).

In the past, when running OS 10.6, I did not have this problem.
