Hi -

After less than 24 in Kauai with my family, I took my memory card from my Oly c-3020z and put it in my laptop PC card adapter to upload photos. No problem. Put the card back in the camera and took a few shots of the night sky, no problem. Put card back into laptop to see new photos--BIG PROBLEM. My PC won't recognize the card as it normally does (D drive) and when I fire up my camera with the card in I get a "F" error and a request to either "power off" or "format." If I select "format" I get a blue screen of death and a "card error" message with a flashing "E" on the top display.

Anyone know how to fix this problem (and what caused it) ? I'd hate to go buy a new 128mb card and have the same thing happen to it.

Push the card in and out of the card slot of the camera about 20 times.

Then turn on the camera and attempt to take a picture.

If this works format the card in the camera.

Also every time you transfer photos to your laptop, when finished format the card!

Leave the camera ON while you push and release the card (against the spring pressure) in and out of the slot rapidly several times. This has worked in the few rare instances the same thing happened to me. I suspect it's just dirt on the contacts making a bad contact with the connectors in your camera and laptop.

Thanks for the quick response and suggestions guys!

I tried inserting/removing the card in and out of the camera with the camera on and off. It doesn't seem to make a difference--I still get an error message then a prompt to format. I'll select "format", then get the "busy" bar for about half a second, then an "card error" message.

I tried the media recovery application, but when the SM card is in my PC card adapter in the PC it doesn't even recognize it as a drive, so no progress there. I did get my PC to recognize the camera w/card as an external drive via USB, but that was it--I couldn't recover anything from it via media recovery and couldn't reformat. I'm not even concerned about the images--I'd already transfered all but two. I just think something fried the card :(

I'm going to fool around with this a while longer, but if I can't get the card back from the grave I'll have to head down to Wal-Mart and see if they have a 128mb card for sale (in Kauai, probaby $$$).

Any other thoughts...? Thanks,
Dave

If an SMPrep Pano-Hack is totally out of the question & none of the other suggestions work....Try going to a Best buy or similar store & formatting in a Fugi. Then from that point, assuming the card is recognized in the camera, format only in your camera... With any luck it won't happen again... But if it is anything like what my Uzi did. A Zio & Pano-Hack SmPrepping was the only workaround that worked for me. I had to do it on almost a bi-weekly basis for a year till I sent it into Oly for ultimate repair.... All my cards suffered these anomolies but since the camera has been fixed none of all the same cards has failed. Not that what's already been said isn't a viable cause. Hopefully it is just a temporary contact issue but if it's like my problem was. It's definately a camera issue that seems to have been repaired at the factory, with the pano hack a lucky fringe beneffit of pano enabling a card....
