apple software people need to use the items they write code for

Seniors cannot remember how to turn the phone on half the time let alone zoom have you read my explanations as to why a basic mode is needed?
Many seniors would dispute your characterization of them. For seniors who do need basic functionality (placing and receiving calls) without all of the bells and whistles (apps), there are cell phones like the Jitterbugs.

They want cool phones and to be cool a jitterbug is admitting that they are almost senile they like to be hip.

I cannot for the life of me understand why people do not understand that a more basic setting is no big thing for apple to do and would be a real asset to non techies?

Jitterbugs do not allow them to see pics of grandkids and some of the things a smartphone does, they want a smartphone but one that is super simple that only does the basic of the basics. They have no interest and are afraid they will hit the wrong button and ruin their phones when they get too complicated. They are afraid to do many things because they get lost in no mans land and cannot figure out how to get back. I am not talking about dementia patients just people that are not tech savvy that want some of the basics.

Think of it more like an iPhone 1 2 or three before they got do many options.

Do you have a problem with that? They soon will represent a full third of our population.
I strongly doubt that the majority of seniors are that uneducated when it comes to technology. iPhones are around for 12 years including help from Apple’s website via articles and chat support, phone support and tech support in any Apple retail store. Not to mention the build-in tips app that is at everybody’s fingertips plus voice assistance and the help of the internet by simply searching for what you need to learn. Plus the ongoing lessons and other activities you can do at any Apple retail store on an ongoing basis.

And you seriously think that the majority of people that are now a senior cannot use this technology by now? Those who cannot use a smartphone right now probably also cannot and have never used any computer system whatsoever. It is their responsibility to learn at least the basics of the tools they are keen on using.

You and I obviously differ. They are not uneducated and most have far more common sense and wisdom that you are displaying making stupid comments like that.

You are basing your comments and what you think and I can tell that you have little if any experience with people who were not brought up in the computer generation of which there are tens of millions.

Nobody has a "responsibility to learn tech Mfg's have a responsibility to provide products that are able to be used by most people and there is a big segment of the population who struggle with smartphones.

What exactly do you have have against a basic menu option or setting for a smartphone and I am willing to wager that if you asked the people who are over 55 you would be in for a big surprise.

Despite thinking you know it all I can assure you that you do not.

I am done with this thread close minded people bore me and are a waste of time.

Finally and years too late, now get cracking on all the other common sense things that need to be an option to make our iPhones work for us better and get out of our way and be the tool they are supposed to be instead of an interference.

How about disabling outgoing calls without Face ID that would end the hundreds of butt dials while my phone is in my pocket.
How does your phone unlock in your pocket with FaceID on???? My iPhone X has never butt-dialed anyone, I also keep it in my front pocket. There is no way for it to make a call when locked unless you ask Siri to do so.
How about when you set an alarm it does not go off on another sound three minutes later when the alarm was set for 1 hour or longer forcing me to go in and straighten it out again.
How about when I have an alarm set and it come on every two hours allow me to stop it instead of snooze it when already in an app so I do not get the stupid alarm again and again.
Did you know you can hard-press the notification that comes up and select snooze or stop? There are no cases where the alarm comes up there's not a way to stop it from there. I use alarms every day myself.
How about not blaring a youtube movie while the phone is in my pocket.
You need to make sure you are locking your phone before putting it in your pocket, or maybe turn off Siri. No iPhone I have ever had has ever done that after it was locked. Also maybe set a very short auto-lock period so it will lock in your pocket if you forget.
I can think of at least a dozen maybe two that should have been solved by now.
Well, the things is, they have been... it's good you are asking now but you should be asking sooner about things that annoy you when you find them, not wait years to end up super annoyed by them the whole time!
Stop inventing new stuff we do not need and make the phones that we have work for us better.
They have been, that what each new version of iOS is doing that generally has many years of backwards compatibility.

That is the way it supposed to work but I can assure you it does not work as intended.

I agree with you

In many ways they keep improving the user experience but there are some really nagging quirks that there is not excuse for 13 years after the iPhone has been out.

Thanks,

I lauded Apple for about 25 years managing to support AppleWorks on so many different platforms. It was a simple application that met my personal needs - work needs were a different matter.

Unfortunately, Numbers in particular is far too complex for my ageing brain, renting Excel for occasional use is too expensive, and Libre Office is a kludgy way to get into my older spreadsheet files.
