Anyone using the 540EZ

Hello all-

I was wondering if anyone is using a 540EZ flash? I have ordered the 10d and being my first Canon, I know little about the flashes available. Would you recommend? Thanks also to all of you that have posted in response to other posts regarding first lenses. You have helped a TON!

If you get a Canon flash, you need the EX;550EX, 420EX, 220EX. I have the 550EX for when I need a powerful flash and the 220EX when I don't. I keep the baby one on the camera all of the time because it clears the lenses and doesn't leave a shadow at the bottom of the photo when the lens blocks the onboard flash. It is also more powerful than the built-in flash.

540ez is not an E-TTL flash, it uses A-TTL. The 10D can't use A-TTL, it uses E-TTL.

So, I doubt anyone is using the 540ez on a 10D, or if they are it's only by putting the flash into manual mode -- if you're going to do that there are much cheaper options.

Look at the EX series Canon flashes and ignore the EZ series.

Canon digital cameras use the E-TTL flash system, which requires one of the Canon EX series of Speedlites, such as the 550EX or an equivalent third party flash. EZ series Speedlites are TTL. Canon digital cameras can not use TTL flash which measures flash off the film plane. Since digital cameras do not use film, they cannot use the TTL system.

Wow...guess I should have checked up on that more! Thanks for catching the mistake before it happened! Any I deas on where to find used flashes and glass?? Ebay seems high but then again what do I know...(after the last post...not too much!) Thanks again!

Check the classified at photo.net or Keh.com. At least with KEH, you will have some recourse if you are not happy. I've bought lenses and flashes from them.

Many people prefer the Metz since they have problems understanding ETTL. It gives both auto and ETTL.
