Anyone using 5D MOSTLY with 50 1.4?

The 50/f1.4 with the 5D is the combination that I use for wedding photography along with my 20D. The lens is a great combination with the 5D as you can get such good low light performance. It is a bit too long on the 20D so I tend to use the Sigma 30/f1.4 on that.

Highly recommend the combination but it depends on your use.

"Wouldn't waste pixels on the 50/1.4" - what a nonsense. I've seen
some of the most stunning photography with a 50mm lens - both full
frame and with a 1.5 multiplier. There are lenses with low quality
out there, but certainly not this one. If you want 35mm, fine. But
50mm is not 35mm. Different lenses, different purposes.

No, just want a high quality 50 which the current 1.4 isn't. You
can take stunning pictures with a Holga to but that doesn't mean
it's a quality camera.

I want Canon to offer a 50 with the same resolution wide open (why
you buy a fast lens to shot wide open not stopped downed) as good
as the 35L or the 85L and I want L build quality. I don't the slow
noisy miss focusing thing they now offer. If more user demanded
quality a this focal lenght maybe we would get it.
I heard that the old 50mm L f/1.0 lens is even less sharp than the 50 f/1.4. So you'd better hold your horses. Don't buy a used one. By the end of this year Canon will introduce an new 50mm f/1.0 or f/1.2. A Dutch Canon technician told me.

As for the 50mm f/1.4, I must beg to differ. I bought one e few weeks ago and I am greatly enjoying this lens on my 5D. It is light, it produces great bokeh and it is razor sharp from f/2.8 onward. I would have liked to buy a 35mm f/1.4, but now I am happy I did not do that. The 50mm f/14 is less bulky and less show. I love it. Last week I have been using the 50mm f/1.4 alongside my 24-105 f/4. It is a great combo. I am at work now, otherwise I would have posted a sample of the 50mm. It may not be the "ueber lens" some would like it to be, but it is certainly a great little lens. MUCH better than Stovall seems to be thinking... Maybe he just has a lemon?

50/2.5 stopped down (sorry, couldn't resist).

IMO: take any of those less than $300 Canon plastic primes between 35mm-135mm, and you will have hard time to tell them apart from prints or 100% if exif data is taken away. The picture below is a 100% cutout from snapshot I created to put a small web pic into my blog. I have seen in this forum pictures (by Ron Purdy?) taken with 50/1.4 that would with sharpness and acutance beat 98% of stuff I'm seeing here.

My 50 f1.4 is absolutely awesome on my 5D. Mine is sharp wide open and it is deadly sharp at even f4. It has to be Canon's best bang for the buck. Mine appears to have been built with L glass :)

The 50 f1.4 is a great lens.

More likely we have different standards as to what is "sharp" and what is well built.

you've made there based on your single(?) sample. You've not only condemned all of Canon's 50mm f1.4's but also have been able to identify Hellashot's apparent lack of ability to assess the sharpness of a lens.

Your powers of logic and insight are truly amazing, as is your lack of tact.

I know what sharp lenses are and why would I bother with tact when stating he may not have the same standard that I do when judging a lens.

At least you don't seem inclined to defend it terrible build quality.

..if you expectations of every piece of your equipment is the absolute best out there. I suggest you try a different forum or a different site. But then again, if you know exactly what you expect out of everything you might be better off on your own since you "obviously" know everything and need no help.

Good luck! :P
