Anyone use a Lumiquest Softbox??

billtoo, I am wondering the same thing? I have been looking at the Lumiquest softbox, ultrasoft and Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce. I have heard a lot of people like the Omni-Bounce because of his small size. I am wanting something to use for portraits and creative lighting kinda of stuff with my 550EX. Also would using the off camera shoe cord help or am I expecting too much from one flash? I would love any suggestions comments or pictures to help me understand the impact these products can make.

Thanks
Lance

I've heard good things about the Sto-Fen too. With the Lumiquest, you have to apply velcro to your flash which may be a turn off for some.

I use on almost all the time ...excellent little device ....
I'm wondering if it would work well outdoors with a direct flash
(Metz 54 MZ3).

If anyone is considering a Lumiquest I notice that they have
"blemished" seconds for sale at a fraction of the regular price.

Am very happy with the ultrasoft on my vivitar 285. I use it for outdoor portraits, subjects shot in the shade, flash stopped down to about 1/2 from full manual, at about 10ft, exposure metered on subjects face. Giives my subjects just a touch of warmth and zing to where they stand out a tad bit from the background..a nice, soft even illumination that looks like you haven't even used a flash at all. I calculate I lose about 2 stops exposure this way, but it's just enough to give my subjects a nice rounded glow.

You could probably use this for harsher sunny, no shade situations, but haven't tried it much that way,,,I always hunt for shade. If I were shooting a sunny subject, I would expose for the highligts, take the flash off camera and aim it towards the shadow part of subject. Would expect the background to go a bit dark though. godd luck

I have one of those smalll softboxes that attach to the front of a flash like a 550 or 420 via a metal frame which has two arms that are spring loaded. Terrible design - front heavy and constantly falls off the flash. The inflatible types are best i think or the lmni bounce.

I'm using mine with the Metz 54 MZ3 (auto mode) without problems. I like it most for macro work.

I picked up a Lumiquest ProMax system a couple weeks ago for use with my D10 and 550EX. The cost: ~$60 and includes a foldable softbox as well as an 80:20 bounce with gold, silver and white inserts. I have used it for fill flash for some outdoor family portraits and was delighted with the results.

What is particularly nice about this is that the whole "system" folds up into a wallet that fits easily into my camera bag but provides a lot of flexibility. This was a little more than the softbox alone but IMO well worth it for the added features.

... I appreciate the kind words. About the bride... the whole time I was taking her pictures, she was telling me that she didn't take good pictures and that "cameras hate me". I replied, "Well this one doesn't".

Because I'm realy happy with the auto mode I've never tested it with ETTL.
But if it's important for you I can make some (quick) testes.

It would be great if you could try some tests. If you could try it as the main flash and also as a fill flash in daylight using Tv and Av modes.

I had the Metz for my D60, but "Five Finger Harry" decided he like the Metz as well and gave himself a "five finger discount". Now that I have my 10D I need to replace the flash, but I am concerned about some of the reports that the Metz does not work with the 10D 100%.

Can you give me any info on using the Metz in ETTL (I know Auto will work well) while using the 10D in Tv or Av?? If it works as well as the EX flashes do in ETTL on the 10D I will order one tomorrow, as they are 2/3 the price of the 550.

Sorry, but I don't have a 10D, just the D60.

I am currently using Stofen Omnibounce on both my 550ex and 420ex. Not that I am unhappy with Omnibounce, but I need a different solution for outdoors and high celing environments. I am thinking of getting both the Lumiquest Softbox and Promax System. I hear alot of complaints about the permanent sticking velcro, but Lumiquest has the cinch strap which may help somewhat.
