AI focus is not a feature many use. If you are trying to capture action then use AI Servo. With out knowing what lens you were using and camera setting the possibility exists that the blurry shots are due to poor shooting skills such as if you were using a zoom at 300 mm and hand holding your lens with a shutter speed of about 160 and a wide open lens.

All is speculation, but if you post a sample with EXIF data intact we will know what went wrong and you can get the exact help you need.

Hi,

While using the AI focus at a soccer game, most of the pictures become very blurry, I didn’t see any focus lock and I am not sure if the focus suppose to lock, also when checking all the pictures in DPP I can see the all the focus points are selected.

What am I doing wrong?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Sharon

Looks like camera shake to me. Try and keep a higher shutter speed for action shots, 1/250th sec or faster. if the lighting is dull up the ISO.

Let there be light!

I believe TeeJay is correct, looks like camera shake to me. Look at the background in addition to the foreground. Both appear to have the same level of fuzziness to them. Got to keep the shutter speed up.

Since the EXIF is missing we don't know your shot was taken. Do you remember your camera settings?

av22 => way to narrow, go for av5.6 or lower and your shutter speeds will increase

As above your aperture is way out for sports shots.

F22 is no good so open it up tp f5.6 & see what shutter speed you get.

Wow, I completely missed in her post where she stated her cam settings. Getting old and blind.

If you would have set to 5.6 or 6.3 at ISO 100 your shutter speed would have been around 1/800 to 1000 and would have resulted in a much cleaner and sharper shot. You would have had enough DOF to get everything you needed to be in focus too.

Agree with the others that the primary problem was a too small aperture. f/22 will create softness due to diffraction, and the correspondingly long shutter speed will give camera and subject blur. Shoot instead in Av at between f/5.6 and f/11.

But with respect to shooting in AI Focus, yes that will be a problem with moving subjects. AI Focus starts in One-Shot, then automatically switches to AI Servo if it senses subject motion. But it doesn't do that very well, and rarely keeps up with action. It is best to simply avoid AI Focus altogether. The professional EOS bodies have never included AI Focus. Just use One-Shot with stationary subjects and AI Servo with moving (or stationary) subjects.
