Ad bans - not really consistent yet, but just wait...

Lately I've found there to be some high-energy interest in the idea of posting advertisements on this forum.

Yet there is a fine line that seems to differ depending on situations.

Below are four types of "ads" we see every day on this forum:

1. Alert - there is a memory stick sale going on at xxxx for the price of $yyy. Here's the link: ( )

2. I got my xxx at yyy store and they are always a great place to buy from. Here's the link ( )

3. Check out the xxx web stite - they seem to have the best price on the yyy. Here's the link ( )

4. I have a xxx for sale at a great price on ebay. Here's the link ( ).

Now which of these do you think would get someone banned from the site? #4, off course. Then again, would you answer differently if you found out that each of the people in 1, 2 and 3 above were somehow associated with the commercial sites they refer us to? Hmmm... interesting thought isn't it. And if pondered for long, will result in a ban of that type of message also, I'd expect.

I'd like to see the shopping info exchange continue - it's great to sign on and find out that it's the last day of a big memory stick sale and I better get my hiney in action and put an order placed.

I'd also like to be able to go to an area on the site where this type of message is contained - and leave the main portion of this forum to a discussion of techniques, experiences, etc.

Are we possibly on the verge of banning all references to locations to buy things or prices? It may be so, and may be justified as well with the current rules for posting.

I think a classified area would be the perfect solution. No commercial ads allowed, member references to commercial sites allowed to point out great deals, and of course if someone is selling something then let them let it be known.

Just my two cents, since it's a contemporary topic.

I think the difference is that in 4. it is the poster that has it for sale. this forum would be much less useful to me if 1,2 and 3 were not allowed, and if a poster was selling something using technique 1 he should be banned too. I think the difference is when you post a link to a good deal you are doing so to help others, when you post it to sell something..well...you are selling something. I appreciate the fact that sales are not allowed here and it is ok to point others to a good deal. For my tastes, that is exactly how it should be done.

I see no difference if someone points to their ebay ad or a store employee does the same here. It is already public knowledge. It gives forum members a chance at a deal that is on the open market. It is different when someone tries to sell direct here privately.

So if the person is selling something at a "great deal" you do not want to know about it? Sounds to me like he is trying to point you to a good deal. Make up your mind.

Which at one point was occurring so frequently it became annoying enough for me to decide not to buy it because of it (that and the fact I never buy anything I can't look at first).

Rules are rules I've heard. Or has this been tolerated simply because no one's complained about it directly?

Just kidding. Yes, I've heard of at least one other but none so well promoted here in the STF as the iNova ebook that it has forced itself on my attention.

There was a point when I had very briefly considered breaking my own rule of never buying anything sight unseen and getting Peter's book until some of his responses in this forum became tiresome. Let him advertise like everyone else. If his product is worth having, word of mouth (other than his own) will sell it better than anything else anyway.

Hi Dan. The problem hasn't been as noticeable lately since someone else made a similar comment in a thread a while back, but the posting that particularly set me off was one where Peter was responding to someone and said the answer was in his ebook, or something to that effect. It too was a while ago so I don't remember the specifics, but it left me with the thought that if he was really wanting to contribute to the forum he could have supplied the answer rather than say in effect, go buy my $50USD book to find the answer. In this case, the promotion wasn't even thinly veiled and I wondered at the time how he could get away with it.

Admittedly, giving away something that’s in the ebook would be bad business but that's the whole point, isn't it? This forum is not for the conducting business. From my point of view, every time Peter responds to a posting on this forum using the name he writes under and even mentions his ebook, he is promoting it, regardless of how indirect it might seem or how helpful he appears trying to be. He has an entirely separate channel for people to ask him questions about his ebooks and that's called email. If I was marketing a product relevant to this forum and habitually came on here even to do something as simple and apparently benign as to answer questions about it, I would love it. Every question I answer to clarify something about it is promoting it, isn't it?

And if you think Peter is interested in this forum outside selling his ebook to us, check out how often he ‘contributed’ to the STF before his book was published.

Don't get me wrong. I've got nothing against him. He's apparently a good author and has a good product although my personal opinion is it is over priced considering the plethora of actions that are available online for free that look to be just as effective as many of his from what little I can tell from the information available on his website, but what I don't understand is why Phil turns a blind eye to this and yet smacks Eric soundly for what I consider an innocent lack of judgment.

I think any regular visitor to this forum since the release of his Sony ebook knows what I'm talking about whether they agree with it or not. I don't like double standards.

...if you wanted to look at it with an even more critical eye, the fact that every time he uses his published name at all on this forum, whether he mentions his ebook at all, is promoting himself.

Nearly everyone else uses a screen name of some sort even if their real name is later associated with it in some way, but no one else's name that I know of who visits this forum has market value and any marketing person will tell you that getting your name out there is 90% of the battle.

My question was followed by the best deal I've found in all my research of CF Cards.

I, for one, find it helpful when people post sites with deals. Unfortunately most people don't post the best deals out there. But I still like to check them out.

About a year or so ago, Phil surveyed the general group of posters. His survey was in response to several requests for a classified section. (Mine included). The overwhelming majority of the responses were in favor of the suggestion. That's all that happened...Phil never reacted to his query, one way or another.

I hear what you're saying. When Peter responded to the posting that way he was "selling" his ebook, no doubt. The only way he could have complied with the rule is to have mentioned another source or two in addition to his ebook as to where the information could be found.

Craig's thought of having a separate ad site would be another load on Phil. There would be constant squabbles between buyers and sellers. Maybe the way to go is the way it is now, have a rule and hope that posters will police themselves.

I wonder what Mr. Stacey would do?
