I know this isn't exactly the correct forum for this question but I've found you guys in the pentax forum to be the friendliest.

I'm having trouble updating my Adobe Camera raw to 4.2. I've copied the .8bi file over the old ones in the photoshop cs2/plugins and program files/common files/adobe/plugins directories (windows XP).

The problem is, ACR 3.7 (and pentax 1.00) is still showing up in the list of camera profiles. Am I doing something wrong? Does yours says ACR 4.2 in the drop down dialog?

Thanks in advance for the help

See here http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html , under Supported Cameras for Camera Raw 4.1 you will see that ACR 4.0 & above is not supported by CS2.

In CS2 if you go to Help > Updates > Show Details, you will get a list of what updates are actually available.

In the list of camera profiles it will list the latest camera profile which may well not be the version of ACR you are using, e.g. the Pentax K10D was not upgraded in 4.1 so it would only offer something earlier, probably 3.7. Pentax 1.00 is the profile embedded by Pentax in the raw file, you will probably find that it will work better than ACR 3.7 unless you have profiled your camera.

I actually have cs3 but I mistyped it as cs2. I can see how if there haven't been any updates for the k10 since 3.7 it would still just say that.

Is there any way to check the version of camera raw installed? Like the help-> about menu on any other programs. There don't seem to be any menus or options of the like when opening a pef.

I see the same thing you are seeing but ACR GUI is 4.2 and I think you are talking about (I think it is called) the profile acr3.7 and you can choose the pentax1 profile.

I wondered myself too why there is no newer profile!

Wrong, wrong. There should be one - and only one - copy of the plugin and it lives in the common files folder. Having more than one can cause endless problems.

No. The profile version corresponds to the version of ACR that it first appeared in, and more than one will show only if it got updated at some point. The Pentax 1.00 profile is the one the camera itself embeds in the raw DNG, it's nothing to do with Adobe.

Did you find the resolution to this problem. I have CS3 and my ACR is 4.3.1 but the camera profile says ACR2.4. My colors really looks bad in ACR. Any tips.

4.3.1 but the camera profile says ACR2.4.
That is perfectly normal. What you see in the ACR camera calibration tag is simply telling you that the profile for your camera has NOT changed since version ACR.

Once you install ACR 4.4, you will see 4.4 there. More accurately, you will have a dropdown menu with a CHOICE of using the old 2.4 profile or the new profile developed for 4.4,
