Absolutely awesome

Pure awesomeness.

At the time of this writing everybidy is raving about the a9, so I had the chance to compare both at an event.

My experience with the a9 isn't very positive regarding AF acquisition compared to the a99II.

I compared the new "fantastic" a9 to the a99II with their native 70-200 f/2.8 lenses. The a9 hunted and hunted and hunted. It never found focus. The a99II nailed focus immediately. It was on the same subject and on the same place on the subject I placed the focus point. The test was inside a well lit big room. The subject was another 70-200 Sony lens and the focus point placed in the high contrast area between the black focus ring and the white body.

On some other subjects the a9 found focus and fast. Just as fast as the a99II but nevertheless the a9 disappointed me and my expectations, especially because of all the rave reviews and articles mentioning it as the new "game changer".

That test sealed the deal for me. A99II is a far better camera and ergonomically much, much better. The weight difference of the a9 and a99II with their native 70-200 lenses are not something you notice. Only the worse ergonomics of the a9.

Best regards

David

It's been on sonyalpharumours that it's been built and in testing phase In the wild. 24mp sensor and some a99ii tech inside. Sony alpha rumours are usually 99% correct
Ah, sarcasm. :-)

Look at the picture, not the pixels
I hope Sony will acknowledge it exists when it's released unlike the a99ii which Sony seem to disown immediately on release

That is the Sony Way. Occasionally, a firmware update will appear out of nowhere.

To Sony's credit their cameras rarely need firmware updates to correct problems like some other companies. They tend to get it right the first time, most of the time.

I know this is the A mount forum but I'm still a little surprised that there hasn't been more skepticism when you make comments about the A9 AF system that don't seem to be supported by anyone other than you. Are there other photographers with a similar experience where the A9 "hunted and hunted and hunted"? Heck even the critical reviews of the A9 haven't mentioned anything that approached this kind of experience. I would say highly questionable but maybe at some point there will be something out there to support your findings other than this post.

I'd also say your agenda might be questionable since you said this several months ago and I can only assume this was prior to your impartial "testing" of the A9.

The A99II is clearly a great camera and one I'd love to own if the lenses worked out better for me but I'm not sure why the need to trash another Sony camera to feel better about the one you like.
You actually make me mad! What agenda? Do you really think that my short writing on the a99II where I included the a9 because I was able to try the both would change anything.

Don't question my findings! It happened and imaging-resource also had AF hiccups with the a9!

Why should I lie about a camera? I have owned Sony from the beginning, and still use an a900 with joy.

You should learn to trust other people.

lol - "David Bo" could very well be one of BRWAT's ALT accounts. To which I'd add, is incidentally well known for fabricating claims and so-called reviews in favor of his personal preferences.

This guy has more accounts than you can shake a stick at, and his tales stretch higher than mount Everest. ie, at one point he owned over 60 camera's, spent most of his time hanging out of helicopters over the Tundra's - whilst posting 5 min post intervals on SAR, and conducting professional reviews for Sony (of which he's never once published) :p

PS. having re-read the opening statement of this topic, I'm fairly certain they are one in the same ;)
Stop this now!

Funny my writings about the a99II which include the a9 can make you act like this.

If you would take the time you would be able to find my homepage, see that my account is from 2006, or 7 and that I also have an old account on dyxum.

Believe it or not. You really need to apologize!

Best regards

David

I was fortunate to have a chance to test out an A9 with the 70-300mm G and 85mm 1.4 yesterday at a Sony sponsored event. The AF tracking wasn't always spot on. I do put this down to my skills with the equipment. The camera and lenses were not familiar to me and what a difference that makes. I did find the camera comfortable and easy to use overall. I switched back to my a77II after my time with the A9. Everyone else was using silent shutter on the A9 cameras while my camera suddenly sounded louder to me than it ever had. I believe I had better luck with the a77II AF. Again, simply because I'm more experienced with it. I didn't find the camera size argument valid for me. The A9 and a77II both felt comfortable in my hands. Hopefully I get the opportunity to try out an a99II sometime as well. Ergonomically I doubt there'd be much difference from the a77II.

There is clearly room for both mounts at the moment.
