A7CR EVF Resolution in APS-C Mode

I watched a YouTube review (Dylan Blackburn) of the A7CR which mentioned that the EVF image appears lower resolution and pixelated when using APS-C crop mode.

This doesn't make much sense to me as the cropped sensor image still contains many more pixels than the EVF can render. Unless they are cropping into the 1024x768 FF preview, which would give something like 667x500.

Can any owners confirm if this is the case?

Just checked. No change in EVF resolution in crop mode. I toggled back and forth using a FF lens and the only change was the angle of view.

Thanks, that is good to hear. It did sound like a rather odd way to implement a cropped view.

Well, that phenomenon occurs in every Sony camera I tested unfortunately. Even the A1 only has to display a 3 megapixel image (9.6 million dots) from a 50 megapixel sensor and when the crop mode is engaged, you can clearly see a degradation. Same with A7riii, A7riii, A9, A7iv ... Maybe the A7CR is immune to this? 🤷

Interestingly, the review claims it is not an issue on the A7 models which have a higher resolution viewfinder. Perhaps it is just not so noticeable on those. Cropping into a low res preview is not a good solution.
