I currently have a A7R III, but recently purchased a A7C II as a lighter alternative for backpacking. So far, I have enjoyed the smaller body.
One of the comparisons I was interested in making was the A7C II vs A7R III for astro. That is often a component of my backpacking trips. Since we recently had a new moon and clear skies, I shot the Milky Way sequentially under identical settings - first the RIII then the CII. My usual settings are: Loxia 21 mm @f2.8; ISO 6400, 13 sec; 15 exposures, stacked in Starry. Landscape Stacker; no dark frames (this time), Long Exposure NR not enable
I purposefully included about 1/3 frame with foreground, which was obviously way under exposed. I did this to compare the noise in both the sky and foreground. It was probably in the low 60s for temperature.
I did a minimum of processing - only some simple stuff - just basic tones (exp, highlights, etc), no "presence" (text, clarity, dehaze), but did set tone curve to medium contrast. No noise reduction or sharpening applied
.
In comparing both a single exposure, as well as the stacked images, I noticed lots ( I mean lots) of hot pixels in the foreground from the A7C II, but very few in the images from the A7R III.
Obviously, this isn't an image I would actually use and usually blend a brighter foreground to the sky, so its practical implications may be limited, but I was a bit disappointed/concerned. I was wondering if anyone else has observed anything similar in the A7C II, or A7IV (same sensor)?
thanks
Doug
