Clearly Auto Focus and Tracking in the a6400 is fantastic. Still I have a few questions

Tracking Sensitivity: Tracking on the a6400 can still be imperfectly sticky when there’s interference in either the foreground or even background. I can discover only a couple of settings for “Tracking Sensitivity”, and that’s for video. For typical still photography, do you have any suggestions for improving “stickiness”, other than this setting or choosing a larger or smaller focus area?

This also raises general questions about the auto focus system in the a6400.

When in AF-C, can it be said that the image is continuously in focus as long as the box is green and not flickering green-white?

In Priority Set in AF-C: Why would one select Balanced Emphasis rather than AF? I can understand that there can be certain circumstances where an out of focus image is OK – i.e. documenting something when things are happening rapidly or where a continuity of still shots is desired, or in video – but in general one doesn’t want a still image to be out of focus, and that can be avoided by an “AF” setting. (Perhaps this can be better understood by explaining the decision algorithm for ‘balanced emphasis’—when does it tend to take an out of focused shot?).

If you are mainly shooting still or minimally moving or slowly moving subjects, do you set 'Balanced Emphasis or AF?

Might a Balanced Emphasis setting improve tracking sensitivity, or are tracking and auto focusing separately controlled entities?

Thank you

I had the a6400 for a few weeks, trial, with the 18-135, and found the af-c quite good, I was able to catch ducks in flight and small gulls and got quite close on catching a couple of swallows but didn't quite manage it, not sure if 1/4000 is quite enough for swallows.

There doesn't appear to be any ability to adjust the sensitivity of the af-c tracking in stills on the a6400, essentially its intelligent! However, I reverted to zone non-tracking in the end and found it just as effective in bif! Regarding c-af I was always set release and ignore such things as focus and balanced emphasis for c-af.

Hope this helps, I am still on the fence with the a6400, I liked it a lot but the lens options and some controls are still limiting, was hoping to see what else Sony announce and for the moment am sticking Fuji. Also eyeing the a7r4 but that's a huge step up in price and iq but I doubt it will be better for bif than the a6400 except for the buffer/uhs-ii support/evf battery but then for £3000 more I expect nothing less!!!

I remain unclear about selecting "balanced emphasis" instead of AF when shooting most stills (exceptions mentioned above). Why take a chance in shooting an out of focus shot. Can you and others comment on the effect of balanced emphasis, frequency of OOF shooting, particularly if you're not shooting burst.

Its your choice, in my experience for c-af its best to just release but it's best to try both and see how it works out?
