A610 / A620 custom timer

hello Canon A6?0 users,

I have sent Canon a request through email and if there is more people who do this maybe something good might come out of it.

the problem: custom timer is a great feature, but limited to 10 photos is too little (4 seconds).

when needed: you want to be in the photo and you want everybody's eyes open, you need more than one photo, and sometimes even more.
also there is no interval shooting in A610, this could be the remedy.

the request: change the limit of 10 photos to 99 photos (still 2 digits, so should be easy to fix that) or maybe 999 photos? with bigger memory cards nowadays, that's not an uncommon number.

so I invite you to write an email to Canon support center:
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ContactCanonAct

will lead you to the following online form: (copy following two lines for A610 users)

https://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=SupportMailerAct&fcategoryid=221&modelid=11998

below I include what I wrote, please support me in this pursuit by filling that form, stating that we want a firmware upgrade for a limit of 99 photos instead of 10 in the custom timer option.

thanks,

Daniel

I am a fan of Canon and a proud owner of the A610.

in Canon Powershot A610 the custom timer is a great idea, but the limit of 10 photos is too little.

can you make a firmware upgrade to enable 99 instead of 10? that would make it much more useful.

thanks,

Daniel Durusoy

I thought I would be waiting for a reply for 1-2 days at least, but I learned that a Canon representative has read my request when I got this reply only few hours after I sent my request:

............................................................................
Thank you for writing to us. We value you as a Canon customer and
appreciate the opportunity to assist you. We are sorry that the custom
timer on the PowerShot A610 is limited to 10 photos.

I will pass these comments along to the Customer Feedback area. Thank
you for taking the time to write.

Please feel free to contact us again if you have any other questions or
concerns with your PowerShot A610.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

so I reiterate: if many users send such requests, Customer Feedback might consider it seriously and develop a firmware?

10 pics really is okay for me, but it bugs me that focus and metering is determined when you press the shutter button.

That means even in custom mode with 30 sec delay and 10 pics it is impossible to shoot a decent self portrait, because focus and metering is locked for all pics when you press the shutter and before you get youself in position for the photo.
Only solution: use of manual mode and try & error.

I agree that focusing for self portraits gets difficult with the given option. I try to prefocus on a similarly distant object and try to fit in the image.

with my old powershot Pro90 IS and its little infrared remote, this was no problem. I miss the possibility for a remote. (even if optional)

here's a situation where I need more than 10 pictures in custom timer:
  • when running with my running club, I want to be in the photo when we start running, and few photos before and after. it's difficult to fit that particular instant into the 10 photos that take 4 seconds (usually either people woudn't have started running or I could miss the action...)
hypothetical case:
  • at a birthday party, you want to be in the frame when the candle is being blown. instead of telling "blow the candle at this instant!", if you could keep shooting for more seconds, it's more likely to catch the interesting moment.
  • you can probably think of some other case, too. it doesn't happen everyday, but it's useful when you need it.
these are not possible with the current status of the camera, but a new firmware could fix that.

Daniel
