A300 - issue with screen?

Hey Guys and Gals

Just thought I would ask this question as I have just noticed slightly odd behaviour with my screen on the A300.

When I move the articulated screen up and down, the screen itself seems to morph, always in one spot, similar to what happens when you touch a laptop screen.

The problem is that the morphing effect seems to be there all the time when shooting, it just seems more pronounced when moving the screen, and always in the same spot.

Im just a bit concerned the screen is damaged. Can anyone confirm that their 3 series camer performs the same or similarly?

Hi

Can you place a lens cap on, turn the camera on, lift the screen, and gently run your finger across the back (screen underside)? Do you get any add behaviour then?

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I am considering taking the camera back to the store. Itdoes not affect picture quality but it is an annoyance as it shows up when trying to take a picture.
 
Anyone else can confirm this?
 
My A300 does not do this. If it's new, I'd take it back.

Hello friends

With a sad heart I returned my camera today. 4 - 6 weeks turnaround, I just hope the technicians see the problem as it is not strongly obvious until you look closely.

Hi James, I also noticed the same thing the other day. I guess the reason why
when one moves the flip screen, the effect is more pronounced is
because one applies force to the frame of the flip screen which then
applies force to the LCD, causing the morph. I can reproduce the morph
by tapping the frame of the LCD gently. It always appears on the left
mid to top area of the LCD of my A300.

Personally I don't think it is a good design and I am also concerned.

Thanks very much for checking. Mine is only a month old so we will see what the technicians say. I am guessing they will say it is 'within specification' because it is not overly noticable. If they say this I may push for a new camera from the shop I purchased it from.

I just do not want the problem to get worse with time. It could be a weakness with the screen articulation. I have searched a few of the forums but have not found much evidence of it from other users.

I will keep you updated to what the techo's say.

Really hope it is not that a big deal. But like you, I also suspect it may be a problem some day. I actually found this out the other day when I tried to put on an LCD protector, which is basically a piece of glass sheet sticking on top of the LCD screen. The morph is not that noticeable but it IS there. Due to this, I am now a little hesitant to use the flip LCD, which is one of the reasons why I bought this camera. :(

OK. If I really press on the underside of the screen then yes I get the usual fuzzy picture you get when pressing on any LCD. However it stops instantly when I remove the finger, nothing persistant. Nothing happens if I take the screen "with the whole hand" (that is, holding the underside with a large surface, not a fingertip), which is what I usually do.

Nothing either if I hold it by the edges, apply slight force to the sides, some twist, or press on the front side.

I can't see it on my A300's LCD.
 
Thanks very much for confirming this. Basically, mine would show a morph in exactly the same spot with a light brush of the finger across the back no matter where force is applied.

The same spot is morphed when the screen is articulated (moved up and down)

I have a feeling it has developed a wekness because of the way the screen is articulated in exactly the same place where my fingers are, moving it up and down. This is not excessive use of the product, I believe it to be a flaw that the screen would develop this after 1 month of use with minor movement. I have used the camera perhaps a dozen times in the field maximum.

I have two A300s (one is broken in other ways - dropped - but the lcd is fine).

I tried what you said, one of the units is perfectly fine, the other one has very slight lcd distortions is I press fairly hard, but they go away right away.

Good luck getting yours fixed.
 
Well I got my camera back today.

It was repaired, took around 4 weeks. The repair centre replaced the rear LCD cover suggesting the LCD cover was out of alignment.

This could be a result of the LCD cover being out of shape or not within factory specifications to ensure LCD screen is not unduly affected.

The problem may be a long term issue with cameras as it applies constant pressure to one part of the LCD. I suspect this could lead the LCD to be damaged / fail in the long run.

Very happy I took it back and had it looked at, it is working as expected now.
