Coolpix A1000 has the same sensor as in the P950 and P1000. It is a compact pocketable superzoom, and has a comparatively shorter reach, approx 850 mm FF equiv., and a much smaller lens for pocketability, much smaller than in the Coolpix Bxxx with the same reach.

The IQ from my A1000 is lower in longer zoom, than the Bxxx and Pxxx, could be my poor handling, but can be as good at shorter zoom range, even comparable with my DX Coolpix A.

I always take jpeg and normally do minimum pp. I use P mode, auto scene mode a lot. I find Nikon picture control algorithm very clever indeed.

I have been impressed by the P950 images from Kathie taken with Bird Mode. The Bird Mode algorithm clearly make the best out of the lens and sensor of the P950, for a big range of scenes, not just birds.

My A1000 does not have Bird Mode. I regularly set it to Auto Scene Mode to let the camera to choose what is best for the scene.

We have a good flowering spring season. We have some very nice lilies, particular those red ones, which seem to be two to three times bigger than the white species.

I captured a few images with my A1000 using Auto Scene Mode. I am very happy with the results.

SOOC no pp, taken hand held in room light at night without flash. auto scene mode resulted in 1/13 sec and ISO 400. Luckily, the VR of the A1000 is very good.

These are very interesting. I looked at the A1000 when launched but discounted it due to poor reviews on image quality. These look pretty good to me.
I bought the A1000 at launch. I had read all reviews available at that time. 90% rated A1000 poorly, mainly comparing it with Panasonic and Sony equivalent.

The only better review was from Gordon Laing of Cameralabs, which was published after I had bought the A1000.

I had seen quite a few images on DPR from A900, the predecessor of A1000. I liked them. At least one user rated the A900 highly.

I just felt either those negative reviews were biased or the reviewers not knowing how to get the best out of the A1000.

I like the reach and pocketability, and I could have bought a A900. But I like the touch screen and Snapbridge of the A1000.

The A1000 cannot compete with its bigger brothers, Pxxxx and Bxxx at long zoom, because of the much smaller lens, but holds it own to say up to 500 mm.

PS

I since discovered that the A1000 is an excellent video camera. Nikon has incorporated electronic VR on the sensor when in video mode. When coupled with the lens VR, which on its own, is already excellent, allows me to take very steady video handheld, even when panning.

Love the Lilies. Which country are you in? These are flowering currently in Australia, I've got some in my garden. Love what you've shared.

Excellent summary, My P7800 was also given poor reviews at launch. Although not without its faults the image quality is outstanding. Keep sharing your pictures, they are not only excellent but very interesting.

Thoughtful and interesting post WPMChan. I enjoyed the images and explanations a great deal. Well done.

Glad you enjoyed it, Ev.

I enjoy capturing images and more so if they turned out to be good, even though the hit rates can be unpredictable.

I do believe all cameras can deliver nice images, obviously within limits of what they have been designed for. I do enjoy the experience when I got it right.

Exactly as I see it - for me your comments are spot on.
